Bigger gas tank ? ? ? ? ? ?
« on: May 16, 2007, 09:12:32 AM »
Hey Guys____ I’m want to take out the stock gas tank (not sure of capacity, maybe 14-17 gals, not sure) on my stock “85 22RE 4 Runner and replace it with a larger capacity maybe 22-25 gals. I want to put it where the spare tire is presently, and build a tire rack on rear bumper. My idea is to build an expedition rig with a longer range between gas stops. Has anyone embarked on a similar project? ? If so please enlighten me on what worked for you, or ANY ideas that you heard or read have worked. ___THANKS BAYRUNNER

A few people have used an F150 tank which is 18 or 19 gallons.

I'm personally using a fuel cell in my truck.

My friend on his 80 pickup grabbed a junkyard fuel tank with the pump and filler and everything and turned it around and set it right on the other side of the driveline. Its awesome. Then add a manual valve that can never let you down and 30+ gallons BAM!

I got tired of the 13.8 in my 83 short bed, got a tank from toyotaboy with some EFI stuff.

I was told that it came from a 86 "1 ton" toy pick up.

had to move a few things butt got it in, went to fill it and DANG! 20 gallons.

now with my ax. tank in the bed I gots 37 gallons to get my and my tralier down the road.

Sorry, point is there are 20 gallon toy efi tanks out there.
mite just bolt into your runner.

Brainlessfool, need pics, I've always wanted to add extra fuel capacity, since owning full size blazers and swapping suburban fuel tanks in increased travel diatance has left a desire to add or modify my 4Runner.
Wow, been looking at my 4Runner rust away too long, need some inspiration and here I will find it...!

85 Toyota 4Runner, solid axle, 22Re, original paint and graphics and not a straight panel to be found!

was going to take pic as I was doing it, butt as fate would have it the kids crashed my camia just before I started it. not much to show tho, just take off the bed and then the shocks. oh and the old tank then cut the round bar for the back of the tank and the shocks. move it back the right amonut (measre the tank you have)
and weld it back on. I had to trun around my bottom shock mounts on the axle.
now the shocks are inback of the axle not in front of it. and I had to make some spacers to lower the tank a bit. about an inch and a half. and I raised the bed a 1/4
of an inch too.

not to big a deal, but I'm not pulling the bed now just to take some pic, sorry.

I'm building aluminum fuel cells, 30 gallons each, one on either side of the driveline. This pic is looking at my new frame and traction bar...

And this pic is my illustration of the tanks installed...
