Front axle rebuild

I will be starting of by disassembling the housing for it to get cleaned, any advice on how to remove all the oil and surface rust?

I was thinking of just sandblasting the housing which should remove everything (oil/rust) but need to find someone here or I'll be doing it by hand.  So if there are any other easy way of doing this it would be great thanks.

Oh one more thing what's a good primer for me to spray the housing with after it's all cleaned up.

i  went to a do ti your self car wash with a few cans of brak clener and used the preser washer ( my housing had hella mud on it) then i used a big wire wheel on a angale grinder, i on spent 15-20 mins with the wire wheel and it looked hella clean ware safty glasses with the wire wheel forsur or youll lose an eye.

If all fails I'll be bustin out the wire wheel and brake cleaner too.

Hehe, a bit of cheap Kragens foamy engine bright, a buttload of sos pads and the cranky ol pressure washer did wonders for my housing. me and the wire wheel... not the best of friends...

mr muscle oven cleaner is awsome on grease

Hell of a lot of brake parts cleaner for the grease.  I found that Muratic Acid can be used on the rust if it is light.  Will take it to bare metal in around 20 seconds, rinse with water then primer.

A 5 gallon bucket, 2 gallons of mineral spirits, and a couple of wire brushes makes a pretty good poor man's parts washer. Afterwards, I hit my knuckles and hubs with a wire wheel in the drill to get them good a clean. I used black Rustoleum to paint my parts with, as it's perfect for bare metal.

You might need a lot of elbow grease too.

I used a BBQ grill paint on my housing.  Seems to work.  What kind of paint do the rest of you prefer?

I keep a ready supply of cheap ass 99cent flat black wal-mart paint on my welder... i paint just about everything with it, just to keep the rust off. I really need to upgrade though.. the stuff just dont last like a good primer n paint job on bare metal.

any type of enamel is gonna be easier to clean the mud off.

Well I got the axle disassembled and have a problem with separating the rotors from the hub.  I removed the two bolts that screw from the back holding the two together but it's still stuck  .  Do I have to have these pressed out  or just pull out the 2 lb hammer.

Any help would be great I'll try and get a picture up so you all have a better idea of what I'm talking about.

You need to remove the wheel studs also. You can just put a nut on and smack it with a BFH.

if u have access to a press it makes it soooo much easier..i had the damndest time separating mine....well they had also been sitting in a junkyard for years and years

BFH  that's what someone else told me i'll try that in the morning.
