Sunburn from the welder???
« on: May 15, 2007, 12:21:08 PM »
WTF?  My shoulder is toast right now.  Ouch.  Feels like a bad sunburn.
Only thing I can think of is I was welding without a shirt yesterday, and got that shoulder pretty close to the work.

Can the LIGHT from a welder give you a sunburn?  Or am I gonna be radioactive now or what?

yes you got sunburned from welding, the intense light/heat given off is on par with that of the sun, exposing your body to extreme uv radiation

i am surprised anyone welding is just not wearing a shirt at all.... good way to injure yourself or get skin cancer...... that is why people wear the big leather jackets when welding...... jackets can be replaced a lot easier than skin.....

Captain - I had not been briefed on that, sir.  In my life, I kinda just go for it.  Yeah, it bites me sometimes - but all in all I'll be dying happy.

It was a nice day, I'm out with my shirt off, and the pain from the sparks hitting me was tolerable.

One strike, no more for me.

Why are you guys talking about leather, though?  Is a regular long sleeve shirt not ok?

most welders (professional anyways) wear leathers... the uv radiation from the welder is that bad.....

hell ive welded in a tank top and not bothered me, but some people get sunburned badly to the point of blisters if they are welding for a short amount of time.....

it isnt only the sunburn issue, but possibly uv exposure to progressive skin cancer levels.... not good!  the welder for a short time produces way more damage than spending the day out sunbathing.....

also leather is a lot more resistant to fire than a cotton, nylon or anything else type of shirt... it takes a lot mroe heat a longer time to make leather burn, and it doesnt spread as quickly.... back in high school, a guy i know had a hoody on, he caught the front pocket on fire and didnt notice it until he had a fireball on his stomach......

I weld in whatever i am wearing at the time.  Usually shorts and a tshirt.  I have had welders' tan before.  It doesn't bother me, as long as I have gloves and a hood on.

:dunno: its not that big a deal.  Try to avoid it.  As for the leathers, they are mostly for spark and spatter protection, not for UV protection.  Just wear a long sleeve t-shirt next time, and you'll be fine.

i know a guy that says hes gotten sunburned from wearing a long sleeved shirt.... thats why he wears his leather jacket when he welds now....

it jsut usually is a safer practice to always have more than enough safety equipment on... like i said, ive welded several tiems with jsut a tank top on, and never gotten sunburned at all, but then again, im one of thsoe people that doesnt get sunburned either... i jsut tan

A regular shirt will not keep uv light from hitting your skin, you can get a sunburn even with a shirt on in the sun. Leathers serve a dual purpose they keep spatter from getting you and keep uv rays away. Plus they're hot as hell to wear.

Still it will get you. Don't think it will hurt the recreational welder though.

I got a pretty nasty burn when my cuff slipped out from under my glove.  Left a bright red braclet around my arm.  Ouch.

I was leaning in pretty good, too.  My face was like 6" and I was hovering over the work.

That was yesterday.  Woke up this morning and it was the first thing I felt.  Hurts pretty good right about now.  Ouch - the dog jumped on me and ay-yay-yay.

From now on, long sleeve shirt every time.

to give you an idea of how bad a welder can burn you, my eyes where black until i was 17 and i got flash berned so bad the pigmentation in my eye bleached, my eyes are now green, light green

also went blind for three weeks when this happened. no joke man, as a former professional welder, i recomend covering all skin and your face

BTW, don't inhale asbestos either.  (hey..  just covering some basics.)  :P

1st time you catch yourself on fire while welding, you'll understand the benefits of wearing leathers.  (although running around with your flannel arm on fire can be fun too.)  Or welding while wearing greasy oil soaked "garage" clothes.

I sunburn easily, so I can't weld for very long without covering up, else I get a nasty  burn.

I have permant bloodshot eyes from flash, I didn't go blind but had patches over my eyes for 2 weeks just loaded with some Vaseline type gel to keep them from burning. Long story but I'll make it short don't open a door when someone is welding on the other side, or he shouldn't have been welding behind a closed door that someone may open to come inside.

Sitting here admiring my welder tan right now. :gap:  It was hot today.  But I did put the long sleeve shirt on after I got everything tacked together and a couple small pieces welded.  I knew it was coming but I've done it so many times I don't really worry about it anymore.  I don't do it bad enough to get burned good just a tad pink and I do burn easily.
