Aussie Locker
« on: May 11, 2007, 01:19:21 PM »
81 Toyota with the 8" f/r, I bought an aussie locker for the rear but due to time constraints I'm going to have a local shop install it. The only real 4x4 shop quoted me; 5 hours @ $70 per hr. Reasonable time alloted? Thank yee

I don't think so.  I put in a LockRight in about 2.5-3 hours from jacking the truck up to rolling out.  With no prior experience.

I wouldn't pay anyone to install an Aussie. It's very easy to do. Go to gearinstalls.com and there is a TON of information on how to do it.

I would install it myself if I had the time or place to do it. Unfortunately I'm living in gov. housing  :usa: and working god forsaken hours. It's either have a shop install it or not have it installed at all

The first one took me about an hour and a half, the second one took me about an hour to install it with the 3rd already on the table.
5 hours sounds like a hose job.

I thought it seemed steep, but I've never dealt with lockers. I just called again and asked about installing 5.29's and they said ~$800 for the front and ~$500 for the rear. I've installed gears before and I don't know how it could take them 10+ hours. They need some competition or something ...  :willynilly:

Eh..  While I think it's on the high side, I don't think it is completely unreasonable.

But more important than that is (as someone mentioned) the rep of the shop.  An aussie locker will require grinding on the carrier and extra time/care is needed.

I'm located in the middle of nowhere - Kalaloch Washington.

I live in Port Orchard and had to look where you lived, that is the middle of nowhere.  I would suggest Bayview4x4.com in Bremerton.  It is closer than Randy's Ring & Pinion and have always treated me well.  The estimate IS the price, Gene has never raised the price more than and few bucks for small parts without telling me ahead of time.  His mechaninc is excellent!  I'd let him work on anything I owned.

Middle of BFE :willynilly: and thats not the bad part - I simply don't have a shop or covered area to work on anything at, sure glad I live in a rainforest  :inthedark:
I bought all new ring gear, seals and everything, so the condition of the locker looks like this:

<img src="http://www.nw-wheelers.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=10125&stc=1&d=1178935997

It needs to replace the one currently installed in my rear diff.

Odd.  Were the ones you witnessed 4 cyl carriers?  While it was nice that you didn't have to grind/file yours,  it is not BS.  (Aussie's web site shows filing the carrier.)  http://gearinstalls.com/bill.htm  from this link on the aussie website.  http://www.offroadlockers.com/install.php/TMa837b4/3bfa/.html  (Lol, Aussie links to Zuk's page.)

But this is off topic.

Call Randy's, and Crash and see how much it'd be after shipping, then go from there.  My friends seem to have very good experiences with Randy's, and Crash is well known (no personal exp though)

But they aren't as strong as the aussies, and for about the same price, I'd go with the stronger locker.

I've blown up one lockrite, and seen 2 others blow up as well.  I don't have personal experience with aussies, but know and have wheeled with guys that have them.  They haven't had any problems with them, and their warranty is better than lock-rite's IMO  trying to get mine replaced was like pulling teeth.  It broke on the road, and took out my R+P too.  they wanted confirmation that the gears were set up right, what brand of gears I had, and even had one rep tell me that I'm not supposed to have them in a street vehicle, and the warranty doesn't cover breaks that way :stopit:  I wound up buying a full front diff assembly (IFS) with a lockrite in it too replace it, instead of dealing with the warranty.

I'm not against lockrite in anyway (still have one)  but in my experience with the comparison, the Aussie is better :dunno:

You need to do some more reading man. I'm too lazy to find the links, but there's a huge thread on both this site and pirate that explains the many differences between aussie's and other lunchbox lockers. There's not a whole hell of a lot of room for arguement here, aussie's are top notch.

How hard does he wheel it?  People have them and run them.  If you've already got it, you can use it RUGER has had front and rear lockrites for a few years now, no problems.    If its unopened, and returnable, you could do that too.  I jumped on the deal I got with that front assembly, knowing I was getting the same thing I had blown up.  They're not bad, but they're not great either :dunno:

One more thing, Aussies don't have tire size restrictions that Lockrites do. :rockingout:

Keep it and put it in the front after your SAS. Get a detroit softlocker for the rear.
