Are tube doors legal?
« on: Apr 27, 2007, 12:05:07 AM »
Does anyone know if tube doors are street legal in Louisiana?

I butchered my drivers door this last week. Tried to fix the door and screwed up the fender. Thinking of throwing a tube door together just so I can use the truck (and because I have been wanting either some of these or half doors).

The best price I have found on a door and fender in a wrecking yard in my area is 250 for a door and 80 for a fender, the door is rusted on the bottom and the fender is dented in the front but "toyota parts ain't cheep"... :snare:.

There is a fine line between clever and stupid, I just wish I knew when I crossed it.

I'd bet there are many jeeps in your area who don't even run doors. If those jeepers can get around without doors then I'm shure you can have tube doors without issues.

From what I understand its is legal  only if the door isnt concidered a structural part of the vehicle (for example a unibody)  I dont know about california but i remember a past thread on this, and the inspector told the guy aslong as it doesnt comprimise the structure of the vehicle.
Life is too short!!!   Do something with it!!!

You may be required to have rear view mirrors mounted on it still.

In CA they can bust you for just about anything.
There is a vehicle code that says "If vehicle is modified with non-factory parts"
So here, if they really want to bust you, they can.

My advice, don't let anything fall out of your cab, mount your mirrors on both sides to your tube doors or your fenders.

I know we had a discussion on this a couple years ago that was multiple pages in length, so searching on this topic would definitely help ya out-

I remember people had spoke to police men who told them that the general requirement is that you must have a lip at the door opening to prevent items from falling out.

For instance, if you have ever been inside of a Jeep, there is a good 3" lip that would prevent a softball from rolling out of the cab. As long as your Yota has this, which is doesn't, then it would be legal, which it isn't.

I like to run without doors, but I am in violation of this door lip rule.

As for mirrors, I thought only a drivers side mirror was required?

2 mirrors are required, drivers mirror is always required, other placement is either rearview, or passenger, your choice.

this was brought up in the otehr thread about the jeep having the lip, and other vehicles not having a lip..... NO ONE was able to find written law saying there has to be a lip ( iused to be under the assumption there had to be a door lip, and i was unable to find proof, anywhere to back it up -- and everyone here pointed that out)

mini is right in the respect that you can get tagged with operating an unsafe vehicle due to modifications...

drivers mirror is required.... rear view is not required, but if there is no rear view mirror there has to be a pass side mirror.... 2 mirrors are required, 1 is the driver, the other can be rearview or pass side -- the reason for that being, some vehicles (lets go with big rigs) have solid rear walls, and if there is a window, it sees the front of a trailer... pretty useless to have a rearview mirror, but you can bet you will never see a big rig with just a drivers side mirror, they have their other one on the pass side -- same can be said for box vans, fire trucks, vehicles with camper shells or camper popups on the back, etc

I drive around with no doors, no hood, and no top.  Cops wave hello to me and tell me they like my rig.  A motorcycle cop specifically told me that doors and hood does not matter.  Only fenders (and mirrors, as someone else said).

yup needs fenders, or at least covering of 2/3 of the tire to minimize road spray

You must have mudflaps that covers 2/3rds of the tire & cover the full width.

I drive around everywhere and don't have fender flares at all. Tires stick out about 6" at least. Needless to say I do have mudflaps that cover the whole width of the tire but still  :D
