I have a 94 2wd toyota pickup and i am looking to possible do a 3rz swap instead of building a 22re. Because with this coversion there is an instant double in horse power(roughly). I'm not woired about having to modify parts. this truck is getting air bagged and a 4 link rear end. SO having to modify parts won't bother me. what gen 3rz would you recommend.

Thanks opie

If you live in CA or have similar smog laws, remember that you can only legally swap a 2WD truck engine into a 2WD truck.

So make sure that what ever 3RZ you get, that you can convert most of its components over and have it setup as a 2WD ExtraCab Tacoma with a 3RZ.

On a side note, last weekend at the junk yard, I found a XtraCab Tacoma 5spd with a 2RZ. So apparently not all 2WD XtraCab Tacos are 3RZ!

They only check smog on 96 and newer cars and trucks here in Vermont. So smog is not a problem and the 4wd part isn't a problem.

DANG!! IF ONLY IT WAS LIKE THAT IN CALI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As for generations, if you want to keep it simple, then stick to the single coil + distributor 1995-97 style (less smog related items), and if you want the best in power and fuel economy, then go with the quad coil 2001-2004 style (but more smog related items).

A.O.R. told me that the early single coil versions were easier to tune with aftermarket cams and such. blane525 is running a 2003 quad coil version and it runs better than my 1995 single coil version (when it was mostly stock).

As for wiring, it is going to be about the same amount of work no matter which version you choose. Specifically speaking, with the quad coil version, Toyota moved most of the relays to the engine bay fuse box, as compared to the single coil version which had engine related electronics in the cabin fuse box. So there might be less wire bulk entering the cab with the quad coil version, but you still have to wire in all the gauges and ignition circuits.

Good luck man :beerchug: Let us know how it goes.

Have you see the 3RZ Database thread yet?

First off thanks. This project my start this summer but I don't know yet. I need to keep my truck driveable until we move. So this is going to be a long project for me. So I am going to take my time and research my choices. This seems to be the best route do to I will have all that extra power with out loosing any fuel millage. How much taller is the 3rz than the 22re?

Thanks Opie

All 2wd taco's had a 2RZ. The 3RZ was resereved only for 4x4 Tacos! The only two-wheel drive vehicles with a 3rz are 4runners (rare depending on where you are) and T100's!

How tall is the 3rz? I am going to air bag my truck so it will lay frame. So i don't want to drag the oil pan off. Modifying the hood isn't a problem that is what i was going to do if it was a couple inches too tall.

Thanks opie

These 2WD 2RZ equipped Tacos, and 2WD equipped 4Runners - what type of sump do they have? Apparently T100's never had the 2RZ/3RZ in 4WD mode...
