Preparing for 1st gen. resto Q's
« on: Apr 08, 2007, 09:13:20 PM »
Want do a frame up resto on the ol' beater82 in the next year or so.
My one big question is: How do I repair rust/paint inside the cowl? Same goes for inside the frame. Trucks not too bad off yet but if I'm goin' down too the frame I wanna' have it back together perfect.(so I can destroy it again)
Thanks.

  um   i  havent had that problem,  but  the best way  is to cut  the rusted areas  out  and  weld  new  patches  in  then  grind  the  seams  smooth

Hasn't gotten too that point yet  There is some surface rust I'd like too take care of when it comes time too paint. I plan on using some sort of inhibitor(por15,rust bullet) What I need to find is some type of sprayer that can get in there and put down the paint. I pretty much plan on pickin' up another cab and workin' on it at my leisure too reduce down time.

I am doing a compleat frame up build on my 81 now.  I just took a spray can in through the vents and sprayed the hell out of it.  Then painted the outside of the truck.

i am just finishin my frame up resto/rebuild on my 83. i got a 81 frame from a fellow MC member. i am just sanding down the body now and i plan on painting the whole thing with rust bullet and then with the rust bullet black shell . As for how to take care of those parts, i have heard of numerous different chemicles that you could spray but i cant think of them off hand :smack:.  I would say if it is bad go with 79coyotefrg and cut and weld :flamer:.

If you really wanna get into the cowl, you are going to have to cut the top away to get to the rust... once you do that, the only way to fix the rust is to cut it out and weld a new piece in the original spot. Keep a good eye on the cowl for the next couple of days after because if you didn't get all of the rust, it will start to bubble. If then, grind down bubbled spots and respray...

Take the time to remove the dash pad, I know dash pad  :willynilly: look for rust to have penetrated through just below windshield and cowl, If it is clean your lucky, chances are you will find rust, don't be afraid to scrape at the paint. I find it easy to make the repairs here first because neatness is not required, then seal up well, as far as under the cowl from outside the cab is easier to cover now that the repairs are made. Hope it helps as rust up here is a common occurrence. DanS

Hammer on your floors. Search for those soft spots and then cut em out.

How you replace it is up to you. Either rivet or weld your patch panels in place, this is up to you.
It takes a lot of time and hard work but it will pay off in the end.

At least that's what I keep telling myself.

I went through every part of my 80, frame up. For the frame, I had mine powdercoated, and they got inside the frame too. What I learned from them, was that you can attach a specific flexible nozzle to your spray gun. I got a cheap gun and nozzle at Harbor Freight (because the nozzle is only compatible with their gun) and its flexible enough to get pretty far up into your cowl.
