My truck runs like crap with the timing set below 12. I really need to smog it tomarrow any ideas? the timing has to be set at 8 the guy says. all the other emisions passed really well i hope they still do when its at 8 if i can get it that low.

while it may not run any better, retarded timing will actually improve the emissions since the exhaust will run hotter and make the CAT work better. what is the timing supposed to be? 5* BTDC? is this a YOTA? Is it CA?

RustyToy

Its an 82 ... the guy said its supposed to be 8 i had it at 16. He didn't say how far i'm alowed to have it off tho. Its just strange... it should run better than that at 5. it hardley runs at as low as 10

at 10* does it idle so slow that it wants to die? if thats all, you should be able to turn up the idle enough to run  :eyebrow:

ya... its more like it won't go over 50 miles an hour and cuts out

like someone is shutting off the ignition or like it has no more power or maybe acting as if it's running out of fuel?  Is this an all stock rig? what gears and tires? need more info... :dunno:

RustyToy

big loss in power... 33s stock gearing. does the same thing with 31s lc motor and dist.  also tried stock dist...   :dunno:

did pass smog today tho i just drew  a line on the pully were it would hit 8 degrees and he passed it tho zeros accros the board and 200 on the ppm at 25 miles a hour. still big loss of power at below 10 degrees tho strange...

I have 31's with stock gears and mine passes fine with it at 5*..... :dunno:. Did you have to dyno yours? How could he have passed you with 200 ppm? Is your standard that high for HC? As long as it passed, right?   :clap2:

A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

Sounds like your timing chain might have jumped one tooth....

oh ya your allowed 2000 ppm and i'm at 200 with zeros across the board. so if i jumped a tooth i need to take off the cover and reset it right? or is it fine to drive?

Just pull the valve cover off & check it (cam chain timing)to make sure it is factory spec for your engine. You might as well adjust your valves while your in there, as that could help you emissions, if they are too tight.
