Lock Rite

Are Lock-Rite Lockers "lunchbox lockers" that go in place of you spider gears or do they take the place of your whole carrier like a detroit with the ring bolted to it?

Yes, but buy an Aussie Locker instead.

Why? cheaper? more reliable? easier to assemble? Aret they both the same design?

Yes.
The pins in it are stronger then those in the Lock Rights.

I've been running a lockright in my front axle for 3 or more years. For the last year with 36s and duals with 5.29 r&p. My lockright still performs like the day I installed it. I think when I bought it the aussies were on back order everywhere I checked, but I'm happy with my choice.

I asked this question on behalf of my dad who has a dana 44(omg!) in a 67 bronco. He does not have a carrier of gears in it so he has to buy all. Were hoping to get a traditional carrier style locker so we wont have to buy a lunchbox locker and a carrier as well. Since Lock-Rite or Aussie (i think) does not fall into this category what are good strong choices for good prices? (37's) DC

I have said this before, but here it goes again.

How many people do you know that have broken a LockRight?  How many people have you heard of that have broken an Aussie Locker?

One of the best differences is that the Aussie Lockers springs are softer so it engages and disengages more smoothly and easier.  Don't worry though, it stayed locked in Moab while doing 2 foot wheel stands so they work great!

I'd say detroits then.  Other than unloading quite loudly occasionally, I love mine.  And the unloading isn't a bad thing, it just happens unexpectedly sometimes :gap:

Aussie lockers are an identical design to a Detroit ez locker, with one exception the pins that run threw the center are smaller and weaker. i have never personally run an Aussie but i have run 2 Detroit ez lockers and i broke both of them.   :twocents:

This has been my dilema as well. I need a rear locker for my DD 4runner. Ive got 5.29s and 35s and I just want the best bang for my buck. Id prefer decent street manners. Ive really narrowed it down to an Aussie or a Detroit. Id probably have a shop install the detroit so that would make it the pricier of the two....but i cant decide. Ive heard pretty much nothing but good things about Aussies, except from people who usualy dont elaborate on why they dont like the Aussie.

I thought the Detroit EZ locker was basicaly a limited slip? Does that mean the Aussie is more comprable to a limited slip or a detroit???

Ahhh im going crazy trying to figure out what to buy.  :hammerhead:

If they are the same design, explain why so few Aussie Locker are broken?  In theory all of the lunchbox lockers are identical, but in the real world some are better than others.  I would be willing to bet the springs in the Detroit are closer to the LockRight than the Aussie.

The fact that LockRight sells a "rebuild kit" to replace the pins should be the first clue to expect them to break.  Aussie has no power or tire diameter restrictions so they don't expect them to  break.

The guy who owns aussie worked for detriot or lock rite. Saw that design sucked, improved it (springs and pins) and made his own locker.

An Aussie will not slip. It's locked all the time.

IMO, it's the best on the market. Never have I seen a pin broken on one.
They've got the BEST warrenty.

I ran one in the front of my Grand and loved it. I'll be running one in the front of my Toyota too.

its not really compatable with eather really. a locker is a locker. limited slips wear out eventually and don't work anymore. ez lockers are still a locker they are eather in or out. they just have alittle more finesse then say a full Detroit.  all things aside if you want to run a budget locker that is still of decent quality go with a ez locker or a lockright. however i don't recommend eather for the rear i think that they are to soft. just my :twocents:

how do you know that there are only a few broken?? i have seen just as many ez lockers broken as i have Aussie`s. i think eather way that if you are going to have a locker that its not something you should be cheap about. go with a full Detroit and be done with it.

Reported case to the manufacture show very few broken Aussie's.  Many times, installer error.
