Bolt in child seat?
« on: Mar 11, 2007, 04:54:43 PM »
Been searching all over but came up with nada. Has anyone ever seen or heard of one?  I need to put a seat in the rig for my son but the only room in the rig for him (right behind the front seats) is to small for anormal bucket seat (then strap his seat in). Not sure if the law in AZ. allows a child seat to be seat belted down to a speacilly made mount. I built one today and it holds his seat down tight but not sure if it's legal.  It definetly will not go any where but you know...... And the only way to bolt a full sixze seat in would be to cut out the x-bar. Then I would lose alot of the side suport on the cage.

Have you tried Summit or Speedway?

Both of the seats summit sells are for use with a seat belt.  On a side note, i looked up child restaints in the section 28 of the az laws and it says nothing about using a child seat on a "regular seat". I'm going to stop by DPS tommrow and talk to them.

You've got a buggy right? Try to talk to the peeps that do the special inspections (dune buggy, kit cars, etc.).

I don't think it to cool to "bolt" your kid into a car seat.

If nothing elsa it mite be hard to get him out fast, and just were do you think your going to drill the hole though him anyway?
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

Child seats are not designed like suspension seats.  DO NOT bolt the seat down, then strap your child into the seat.  Most child seats are designed so that the car seat belt will actually strap through or over the "kiddy 5-point" belts.

If you go this route, bolt the seat in for positioning only, and then use a regular seat belt bolted to your frame/cage to strap to the proper points on the child seat.

oh...and most child seats rely on the springs in the car seat for suspension and comfort of your child.  If it's rigidly bolted in, your kid will have a very bumpy ride.  If you're running hard plastic "racing" seats, then you know how your kid feels...but don't make them sit in a hard plastic seat bolted to the cage with only 1/8" of foam under the upholstery while you run around in a suspension seat or a bucket from a nice ricer car.

I would worry less about the law than how you feel as a parent.  If it makes you feel good and safe, then run it.

I just got back from the local DPS office. The officer I spoke too said as long as the seat is secured then there is no problem with running it like that.

Also I'm not bolting his seat down. I was looking for a seat that can be bolted in like our seats. Like a child seat made for buggie's and the such. I'm using a back seat from an x-tra cab to bolt in under his seat and then use the seat belt I attached to the cage to hold his seat in.

Ok, I wasn't going to say anything about this, but after thinking about for a while I just couldn't keep it in..... Not sure on what are you saying ?  I really, really, hope you are not calling me a bad parent!!!

how about a go cart seat?

Might look into that. I've got it all figured out now. I also have a seat from my Blazer. I may be able to cut the back off of it and just use the bottom part. The seat from the rear of the x-tra cab isn't very padded.

I've had the same ideas...there was a good thread on Pirate where I got some good constructive criticism about my ideas.  Not saying you're a bad parent--just some things you may not have thought of--I hadn't thought of them, either;  Doesn't make either of us a bad parent.

Good for you for checking with DPS.

For the record, I've used heavy ratchet straps to tie my daughter's car seat on top of the center console when we needed to seat 6.  I had two primary straps that tied the harness in her seat to the seat belt/seat frame attachments.  I used two secondary straps to position the seat and keep it from tipping over.

But, at the end of the day, it's ultimately your decision as a parent.

Doesn't PRP have 'preemie' and 'toddler' sized suspension seats?

I tried finding that thread on pirate but since I'm not a red star I can't search!!!

Not sure about PRP. Have to look. I came up with another idea but it reqiures about  a day and the sawzall and welder to make happen.  :flamer:

Also, I'm not so sure about how comfortable my son is when riding in my 80 or the wifes Chevy. I cinch the seat belt down so tight I can sit on my knee in his seat and it barely moves down.  Thats the way the fireman at the class told us how to do it.  Seems like I'm taking all the padding out.
