T case

I just have quick question for any one who might know. I have an 88 SR5 V6 with a five speed and I was wondering if what it has because I read several things saying all V6s came with chain drive, but from what I know about chain drive you are supposed to be able to shift on the fly. I cant shift on the fly must be at a complete stop. I recentely got a tranny with a gear drive on it free to swap if nessary but am waiting to do tranny and Tcase until I save more $$$. Just thought I would ask while I am waiting.

I forget how many bolts the gear driven case is suppose to have but since you got one of each count the bolts on the back of the gear t-case that holds the cover and if it matches the number on the other than you got to gear driven t cases

Gear driven t-cases always have a 7 bolt rear cover.
All chain driven t/cases always have a 5 bolt rear cover.
Your chain driven case may have a worn out syncrow, or could be low on gear oil.
