I bought an unknown case to put my 4.70MC gears in. I bought it back in Feburary and have just got to doing the changeover ... with a dislocated shoulder no less!!
I ran into a BIG problem other than breaking bolts

First off my trans shifter hits the 4x4 shifter when in 4 wheel low and I shift to second gear. It hits it square dead center and knocks it into neutral so I got to thinking something was wrong.
When I took the boots off I could see that the floor had been patched like it was suppose to have a top shift case. I took out a forward shift case.
The front of the tunnel hole had to be cut back more for the main shifter. So from looking at the trans pics on page http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/transmission/3a.htm  I have an R151F Turbo trans.

Ok now this gets worse... I have a shorter shift rod in my rebuilt case than what I took out of the truck and the drive flanges have different size hole spacing.

For now I need to get the 4.70 gears in the truck. Do I change shift rods and flanges or tear both down and change gear sets ?? Later I want to add an adapter and second case ... but can I use both cases ? with which adapter ?  Both cases are 21 spline including the 4.7 gear set. BUT if it's a 151 then shouldn't it have had a 23 spline count ??

I'm stumped  :inthedark:

It looks like to me in the first picture you have the T-case has shift rods out of an 84-87 Carbed or Turbo Truck and the picture below that the T-case has the shorter forward shifting rods out of an 89-91 EFI.  On your flanges you really need to buy the triple drilled flanges and it will solve that problem.  Or by what the picture says you just need to swap them around.  Hope that helps.

I am a bit stumped on your transmission. I am sure Marlin would be able to identify it in a heart beat. It looks like a G54 to me, but since your truck is a (late?) '88 EFI 4cyl, it must be a W56-C. However, since you picture a transfer case with the longer shift rods as being "from the truck", this means the transmission must be a G52/54 which was not available in a 1988 EFI4 cyl  truck...

Do you know if the previous owner changed the drivetrain configuration? We can figure this out of you could read the transmission serial number off of the rear flange on the front transmission housing, and report back the number here.

As for the shifter interference, remember Toyota made a variety of cabs with different drivetrain, so Toyota shift handles are made for each setup and are bend at slightly different angles. If you have access to other handles, it would be best to play with a couple to see which one fits best. If you have no other choice but to alter yours, then becareful on how you do it: There is rubber in the handle that can be damaged from high heat (torch) and the end of the handle that plugs into the transfer case can be damaged or broke off in a vice. Bend it accordingly.

Since the tunnel is butchered I can only say it looks like the trans must have been changed.

Trans # 50403923

From the fill plug on the side of my trans I've got a G54 trans. The plug is chewed up from what must have been slipping Vise-Grips

Some guy that came in while I was doing the 4.7 gear change stole my Marlin shift knob. All the parts were on the table, a guy came in to get some aluminum welding done and the next day I couldn't find the knob... still can't.

When I add the second transfer case can I change the forward shift second box to a top shift and where's the forks, I've not seen any on here. Or can I still use forward shift in the second box ??

BigMike

Ok, thankyou for the serial number. That transmission is a G54 from 1985, guaranteed.

Sorry to hear about the stolen turtle knob! What the heck?! PM me your full name and zip code and I'll pull up your account and send ya out another knob for free

I fixed the shifters hitting eachother by rotating the short one 180 degrees. Now it leans over to the passenger side but they only slightly bump eachother in low lock 4x and reverse.

Well I guess an '85 trans is better than no trans at all. I should have bought the trans too that my second transfer case was taken off of. Didn't think about it at the time but I was getting light in the pocket after loading up the transfer case, '85 solid front axle and spare third, '90 V6 rear end and springs.

 my MC 4.70 gears !!!

A guy told me the other night that I had to much time on my hands, so to prove him right here's a gear shift knob I'm making out of an old aluminum riser from some casting I did a year or so ago. Pretty tight grain to be scrap from aluminum casting ;)

Trying to get up that hill with all the loose sand and dirt and rocks rolling out from under the tires is a PAIN when you get to a step rock or the truck gets on three wheels, which seems to be what TOY's do best. So when you have to back off a little then try it again it's not easy unless you have an automatic or three feet to work the pedals so ...

Toyota left an extra cable mount on the air intake and an extra cable cam wheel on the butterfly but they made it for a "push" cable. I cut it off and flipped it over and welded it back on so now it's a "pull" cam.

kentuckyken

I drove it down the road and back using the thumb trigger instead of the pedal ... it works!

kentuckyken

It's FUN winching your buddy's CJ6 up  :rofl2:

In all fairness though, the 44 Dana rear had bad R&P bearings so we swapped in a Scout rear but the ratio was higher so he took out the front drive shaft... should'a left it in but he wanted to use the low range.

I took the trigger off the knob and made a collar to fit on the shifter under another skull I made yesterday. I don't like the collar, it'll have to be cast into the skull... the skull is kinda on the small side too.

That last pic is 8 years old. When the ol lady seen it she asked who I was gonna kill. Guess she thought I looked pi$$ed. Well I was welding for the public back then and I had to deal with some real crazies back then. One guy wanted me to patch a steel tractor seat with an aluminum beer can ...
