hard to lock hubs
« on: Feb 09, 2007, 09:25:48 AM »
this isn't a big deal...and may seem like a stupid question...but why is it that one of my hubs turns like butter and the other is almost completely impossible to turn without pliars? :headscratch:

and is there anything i can do to make it easier to turn??? the soulution is probably as easy as a can of WD-40... :flamer:

i believe there is a little spring behind the ball that the turning part of the hub clicks into, and i think depending on how hard the spring is to depress determines how hard it is to rototate your hub in and out of the lock position.  i could be wrong but i think i have heard that before.

Have you gone through them recently?  Maybe time for a rebuild?

take'm apart, clean them up with some brake cleaner, grease them up, and call it good

you prolly just got some water into it, and it rusted a bit.

It might be, or it might not be.  Mine have been like that, and I just took the cap off the hub, and wiped out all the gunk.  Sprayed it with some brake cleaner, washed that off after 20 minutes, wiped everything dry with a rag, let it sit for a while to dry completely, then put some new grease in, and put the cap back on.  I also ran a small bead of permatex around the cap, no more water in the hub.

You may get lucky, you may not.  All my rust was surface, so it cleaned off pretty well

if they have never been rebuilt.....probably a good idea to replace the o-ring and gaskets (they are only a few bucks) oh and beware the elusive tiny little spring and ball....dont lose them lol

The O ring is the problem. It swells up or just gets dry and causes too much drag when you try to turn them.

I would suggest the O ring at least get replaced and make sure you lube it before putting it in.
