Is this normal?
« on: Feb 04, 2007, 09:13:53 PM »
hey guys i just bought a used 4cyl third member w/ 5.29 limited slip. i don't know what kind of limited slip..the guy said that it has limited slip but don't know what kind. i looked at the diff and inside it has some clutch packs. also when i make turns with part throttle or when i start to make a turn (U turns or 90 degree turns) it chatters. another thing is that the ring gear is bigger but its in a 4cyl 3rd member and i had to modify the the axle housing. what i want to know is that does anybody know what kind of limited slip or locker it is and why does it do that and plus why is the ring gear bigger than it should be? thanks! :help:

Did you use regular 80w-90 gear lube? Most limited slips will require a friction modifier along with the gear lube or even get the lube with it already in there. Without the friction modifier you most likely will experience the chattering you described. Sounds almost as if the rear end is gonna come apart. I had a Camaro some years ago that did the same thing and couldn't believe that the noise was totally gone. Hope this helps.  :crossed:

yeah at that time i only had regular 80w90 fluid but ill give it a try. thats what i was wondering too but i ended up putting it in the front because i didnt like the noise. i a tech for ford and on all cars and trucks with limited slip we put synthetic fluid in it so that it doesnt chatter. i was wasnt so sure that it would apply to aftermarket limited slips. thanks for the help.

As long as it's a clutch pack type the modifier should fix it.  :yesnod:
