Im going with an 83' Short bed, extend the wheelbase as much as possible, 84-85 front axle, Marlin's HD L-series tranny (very short drivetrain), and keep it low to the ground. The early style fenders will allow alot of up travel without much of a lift.

i really like the 3rd gen looks. the IFS sucked but thats what an sas is for. the wheel base is long on the ext cabs but it isnt horrible. also they got good motors, trannys and t cases too

i love the '79-83 pickups, especially '79-81(before they got those ugly square headlights, but the bezels can be swapped out to early ones :))

big fenderwells, best looking out of all the trucks toyota's made in my view.  on the downside the inside of the cab is a little smaller, but it's minor

the only problem with toyotas is if i jump it, (not paying attention, so i didnt know the jump was comming, or i would of slowed down and whent around it) without wearing a seat belt u end up smaking ur head on the roof when it bounces, lol, it hurt

same thing happened to my buddy in my taco..Had a beer can in his hand..Went for the grab handle and it was too late..Can't grab a handle when its full..so his arm went forward on the dash to stop himself from hitting the windsheild and the lip of the can went down his nose taking skin with it..This was also at sand lake but just before the second bowl...I will be at sand lake the weekend of the 27th by theway..Back to best 4x4's now I really like the look of the taco..I shortend mine and can't wait till the bed goes on..I think t will look killer...I would sas and duel case my taco but my runner is already there so the taco is just a back up rig or for going to the sand or mud...I just don't want to sink alot of money into a rig with a salvage title..

I am going to have to throw a vote in for the FZJ80s. Yeah they are a little bit big, but the drivetrain is hard to beat! 93s are my favorite. You have to give a vote to anything that came with front and rear lockers from the factory. Throw a lift and some 315s on and you have a great all around real world wheeler....

I think geiger might be onto something....

my 92 toyota 4x4
short bed singlecab
getting a new 22re longblock installed as i type (has high lift cam and oversized valves!)
has a a340f auto

3 bl with 31.10.50s

will eventually get the marlin 4' sas/ rear lift i bought like 2 years ago lol
35x.12.50s on 15x10s
front trutrac and rear detrot locker

and best of all..the paint is white, so if i get a scuff its an easy/cheap repair

the main reason i wanted it was because i was looking for a truck to wheel in and didnt want something you see every 5 mins...i like uncommon vehicles...same reason why i have a 72 skylark and not a chevelle, camaro, stang or w/e
i love your sig your down to a half of a maverick

73 Maverick(jointly owned w/ lil bro)
64 LeSabre(sold)
82 RX7 (scrapped)
92 Toyota p/u 4x4 (dead) resurrecting underway
72 Skylark (dead) resurrecting underway
87 Grand AM (junked)
79 Regal (sold)
90 Geo Prizm (R.I.P)
