Best Toyota 4x4
« on: Feb 23, 2004, 06:40:43 PM »
Hey y'al, Opinion time. I know that this is really an opinion type of question but what do you guys think is the best daily driver/trail rig Toyota 4x4? This can include late model trucks/4runners with SAS, Landcruisers, etc. Just make sure to give support as to why and also potential drawbucks like $$$, power, aftermarket parts availability, availability to buy used, etc.

for example: 85 efi xtra-cab truck.

The Good:22re fuel injected engine, solid axles, slightly longer wheelbase, 22re easy to work on and reliable, parts are cheap, geardrive t-case, 5spd tranny, lots of aftermarket parts,4.7 gears and marlincrawler is much cheaper to install.  No SAS required, just lift with soft springs.

The Bad: 22re somewhat underpowered with large tires,
not a whole lot of cab room,  extremely rare and hard to find used in any decent condition.

Let's see what you guys think!

best regards,
Fred

I would have to agree with you on everything except the extra cab part.  And that is because the 1985 4x4 EFI pickup that I'm saleing isn't extended cab  So if your interested it's in the sale adds

I am getting a new 2004 taco 4x4 v6 extra cab trd.  Locking rear diff, and superchargable V6 are great! I have a 89 4runner v6 (removable top).  I would go with the others ideas, I want the new taco because it is NEW.  It will kick some ass offroad, but if you want a SERIOUS rig the 85 4runner or tuck is the way to go.  First year of EFI on the 22RE, and the last year for solid axle!  I think toyota should release a tacoma with solid axle (as a option) for those who would like trouble free cheaper way of building a rig.

Hey Max, you're gonna Love the taco trd! I've got a 2000 4x4 v6 extracab trd and it has been a hell of a lot of fun so far. I've also got an 89 v6 extracab truck with a SAS. I get the best of both worlds. Is your 4runner built?
As far as tacos with solid axles, that would really be the day!

Under the assumption I had $$$ falling out my  :moon: I would get an old FJ45 Wagon or Bandierante and stick in a fuel injected motor, do a mild lift, slap some MTRs on it, paint it a nice Toyota cream/tan color and park it on my grave cause I'd have died happy

LA Fred,
No I don't have much done to my 89 4runner.  It is a v6 and I got Downey headers.  I have a 2" lift with rear add-leafs and torsion bars cranked up in the front from NWOR.  I also have a borla exhaust, Kayline softtop and 31s on stock alloys.  It is a cool truck but I am 19 and don't want to wrap more $$$$$ into it so I will be building my taco up when I get it!!!  What have you done to yours?

Hey Max, my taco is completely stock since it's my daily driver.  But even then, the factory rear locker makes a huge difference off road. I can run lots of moderate trails in it. For the hardcore stuff I have an 89 x-cab v6, SAS, dual lockers, 35" mtrs, marlin crawler......

Did you SAS your self?  I am thinnk about 2 years from now I might SAS my 2004 taco which I don't actually have yet I will in June!  I think I will have to have some one do it for me, I am good at fixing thinks but I have none of the tools I would need to perform a SAS

Yeah,  I sure hope so but it took me roughly 10 years from where you are at now to get there. It will be the day when everything is all be paid off. But, gotta feed the addiction.

The 76 FJ40 is my favorite however it's not yet smog exempt so I'm not even going to look for one right now.  Someday I will be able to get ahold of one though I'd take a cruiser anyday.

As far as pickups and 4runners go, I'd have to say my favorite is a 4runner. I've had 5 different Yota's now and I like my runner the best. I've had an 83, an 84 extra cab, and two other 84 regular cab pickups. My biggest problem with these trucks was that they had no power(22r). Having the v6 in my 4runner is great, I can pull fifth gear up hills on the freeway with 5.29's and 35x15.50. The other great part is having the shorter wheel base and being able to carry other passengers. The solid axle swap wasn't hard to do. It wheels great and is nice to drive daily.
YOTAISM

I agree with you icrunner on the v6. I could never find a 4runner with low miles and a decent price and I fell into an 89' x-cab v6 with 70k on the engine. It's nice not having to downshift for every single grade on the highway.
Any engine mods?

Hey Max, let me know if you get any info on taco SAS. I think that it's a little different than the 89-95 trucks since the tcase sits on the other side. I believe Marlin did one for a 4cyl taco a while back.

Hey 95 taco truck, why would you pick a cruiser over any of the pickups and 4runners? Was 76 the first year for the ambulance style doors?

La Fred, yeah The t-case output for the front d-shaft is on the drivers side and so is the diff ofcoarse.  So you cant use a old toyota front axle.  Got to get a dana 44, at least that seems to be the most popular.  Or you can get marlins adaptor to use a old style t-case with pass. side output and use toyota axle.  It is alot of money you could plan on spending 5K or more if you buy alot of the parts.  So I will just keep ifs for the next couple of years I sure I will be happy with it after I have been driving my 89 4runner with cranked up torsion bars (CRANKED TORSION BARS SUCK)!
