The Diesels Are Coming, But Not for Toyotas, Yet!

This may make enthusiasts outside of the USA laugh, but we may finally be getting "our fair share" of the exciting new diesels. An article at dieselpowermag.com indicated the following:
The new Cummins diesels are a 4.2L (256ci) V-6 and a 5.6L (342ci) V-8, both using a 90-degree V-block design with aluminum heads and an iron block. They use single overhead camshafts, a new EGR system, a single turbo, common rail fueling with piezo injectors, and a diesel particulate filter. The V-6 weighs in at 663 pounds, and the V-8 tips the scales at 788 pounds, compared to the current 5.9L inline-six engines that weigh about 1,100 pounds.

The V-6 is rated at 270 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, and the V-8 is good for around 325 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. These numbers are not set in stone and may rise by the time the engines reach production. In a performance test using a Durango fitted with the Cummins V-6, the SUV reached 60 mph in 9.6 seconds. That's faster than a Durango with the 5.9L gas engine. The 1/2-ton Ram 1500 with the Cummins V-8 hit 60 mph in just 8.8 seconds, which is approximately two-tenths of a second slower than a Ram when fitted with a Hemi 5.7L gasser.
Unfortunately these diesels will be included with Dodge Durango and Ram pickups attached.

Daimler Chrysler, the parent of Dodge and Jeep, is also offering the Mercedes Bluetec V6 diesel in the Jeep Grand Cherokee available later in the 2007 model year. That is in addition to the Italian made 4 cyl diesel available in the Jeep Liberty.

If Daimler Chrysler puts that Bluetec engine in a Wrangler Unlimited, with Rubicon drivetrain bits like a 4:1 Rocktrac transfercase and Dana 44 axles, the attraction will be hard to resist! Although I certainly would rather have a Hilux Double-Cab with an engine of the Bluetech's caliber.

Toyota must be noticing this and planning accordingly. -- Matt

WHat does this have to do with Toyota?

Well, it's posted under General 4wd Discussion. I thought it may be of interest to people who like to consider engine swaps and it may indicate the direction of the trend for those who wonder when we will see factory Toyota diesel 4x4's in the US. I realized that the title was misleading so I modified it to avoid causing confusion. -- Matt

Sounds goo Glen...you would think with a spagetti avatar like that he would be cooler than to post about Chryslers.

By the by...I just saw a commercial for the NEW tundra.

Last winter Autoweek wrote:

QuoteToyota executives have all but confirmed a heavy-duty diesel engine for the next generation of the Tundra pickup. Toyota does not build a truck-sized diesel engine, but it could adapt an engine produced by its truck-making affiliate, Hino Trucks.

Is it confirmed yet? All I've seen so far is speculation on the boards.

QuoteSuppliers of diesel components, such as Denso Corp., Delphi Corp., Siemens VDO Automotive and Robert Bosch GmbH, expect a big uptick in North American sales.

"We have a strong desire and prediction that light vehicles - SUVs ahead of cars - will have diesel technology," says Mitsuo Matsushita, CEO of Denso International America Inc. "It could grow to as much as 7 percent of the market in 2010."

Come on guys, it's not a religion

I'd take one of those over an FJ any day of the week.  I love Toyota's but the new Wrangler Rubicons are soooo sooooo nice off-road.  The worst thing about them is the V-6 engine.  Underpowered.

im gonna have to agree with that last post, I would rather have any jeep over that FJ, sorry, the fj made me loose a little toyota love, but I still love my truck, and its still getting its sas
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

I am really bummed to find out that Cummins gave up the I6.  The inline engine was what gave Cummins so much more reliability over the Powerstroke and Duramax.

Have you ever driven an FJ? They are sweet. Lots of Torque and A-trac, what else could a man want?
If you still have control you aren't going fast enough

Oh yes it is!

And comparing a rubicon to an fj is so stupid. FJ kicks the rubicons ass onroad, rubicon kicks the FJ's ass offroad... the two are not comparable. But we'll know which ones better after 100,000 miles when the rubicon starts to fall apart.

Blind spots are something women complain about, not dudes. Corvettes and Camaros have big blind spots, so that must mean an FJ is just as sweet.

true true,  that would almost be a good comparison except those cars are made to go straight and um the fj was supposed to be desighned with functionality,  oh yea thats right toyotas drive themselves, no need to see.. LOL   :slap:
