We've taken stock open IFS Toyota's through there, it is a very long climb out of Lockwood Valley just keeps going up. This section is a little tricky but if you take the right line there should be no issue such as rolling. As you can see if you take the correct line like I did in my old Sammy and TurtleTruck did in his 4Runner you lean heavy but don't even lift a tire, but if you go just a little to the left you have a problem. I sure wouldn't want to have put that Hummer back on its wheels there, that is a very steep hill and it is very long one mistake and it would get real ugly.

No, it's exactly as hard as it looks.  Welcome to the new Hummer.

why is it I've been seeing a lot of pics like this recently.  a rolled truck in a spot that a Metro should be able to go through.  One of those "yep, I rolled there...and I really had to try" type of things.

I'd have to say that the Hummer rolled due to driver error or at least driver exceeded the limits of the vehicle in taking the wrong line. If you could get a Metro there it should easily have kept all 4 firmly planted and been able to drive through, of course it is much narrower than the Hummer. Even still we have taken many stocker vehicles through this trail, sure we had to work them to get through but still that was not the toughest part of that trail.

I have to say, it's often the case the trail looks easier and less steep in the photo than it is in real life.  But, rocksurfer's imput confirms that this guy is a disgrace.

Im pretty sure that they take them there during the developement to make sure they work the way they want, and to find as many weaknesses as possable.

We took a H2 out to Calico once, lasted all of 10 mins. on the trail and we were just cutting across from Mule Canyon to Odessa from the campground. He went over the first little hill and it almost did an endo going back down the other side. One of those slip fit steering arms popped out and that was all she wrote. We helped drag it to Ghosttown Rd. so Hummer could come and get it.

personally i think the H1s arent offroad friendly, H2s and Offroad should never be used in the same sentence, and H3s do probably the best when equipped with diff lock and traction control.. (uncle has one)

still hate Hummers.

I had a friend in high school who was pretty wealthy. He bought a late model H1 for something like $24,000. We took it wheeling and it SUCKED in the local terrain. Way too heavy, big and crappy for the tight trails we have. Not to mention everything that broke was impossible to find, and EXPENSIVE. Really the only cool thing was the run a flat system.

He ended up selling it about 6 months later for 30 Gs and bought a brand new tahoe and dropped some 24s on it. I had always thought H1s were awesome until I rode in his. Never liked them since. That was what was so ridiculous about the whole H2 and H3s as being "good wheelers, like the H1" because the H1 served its duty well to the armed forces but for the individual who wants to go offroading, it is just NOT practical.

Though, the H3 is now one of the best out of the box offroad vehicles available from a factory, next to the Rubicon and Powerwagon. Offroad mags LOVE the h3. I dont doubt they do well now with all the input from Petersons, and Four Wheeler, ect. I just wish Toyota had jumped on the same bandwagon. An offroad designed tacoma or 4runner would be bad ass.

I'd like to see a V8 offered in the FJ and Taco.  FJ especially since they offer one in the 4runner.  But I know it wont happen.  For some reason Toyota seems slow about jumping on bandwagons.

The power bandwagon - look how long it took them to make a truck with decent power, and still no V8 taco/fj
Full size bandwagon - look how long it took them to build a real fullsize
SUV bandwagon - again too little too late, full size SUV's were hot for so long and Toyota missed the boat

yes, they still sell lots of vehicles, but they could have sold more.  Lots more.

dead money.... thats so true.
They forget the American market is into V8 powered vehicles that can actually go off payment.

What I find curious about the GM offerings is that last I checked nobody makes a front locker for them.  So how great can they really be off road with stock IFS

Yeah i dont really count the FJ in the same category as the PW and rubi. even the h3 does a better job. The FJ was designed by some desk jockey that had never wheeled before. Yes, they did a lot of research on what to put in it equipment wise, they totaly over looked one very important factor: visibility. one of the many great things about the old cruisers was they were small and had incredible visibility. the new one lack both of those points. All the lockers and gears dont do you any good when you cant see worth a damn out the back of the truck.

I just wish they had taken clues from the powerwagon and the rubicon. a package where you get a beefed up Taco or 4runner with offroading in mind. the FJ is a step in the right direction for sure. hopefully they will get at least something of a hint from the rubicon and go in THAT direction.

Probably the reason they cant keep up with the American market is because its completely different than the rest of the world and ever changing. strong, reliable, solid axles ect VS. comfort, smooth ride, butt warmers and cars that parallel park themselves.

Anyway back on topic, what do you guys think of my motorbike project. i find offroad bumpers are excellent for fab material  :gap:

Isnt the american market along with i think the european market the only two that have IFS in their Toyota 4x4s? Arent the rest still SA...?
I think even going back to a SA would be enough for the toyota to get its foot back in the 4x4 scene.

I havent sat in an FJ or the previous FJ 40 to make an argument like you have... but from the looks of it... i can agree.

and i do agree with the rest of your post as well.

Well the hilux pick ups and 4runners lost the SA in 97 but all the land cruisers still have them (along with diesels and 5 speeds). I think IFS became an option over seas, where as it was the ONLY option here. ive seen hiluxes of the same body style with ifs, and others with sa.

I was in SE Asia last year and I saw a ton of new Toyota 4x4 trucks and SUV's, many diesel, all IFS.  They looked nice, I bet they would be popular here.  A different look than the Tacoma, but not cheap looking by any means.
