A Mile Marker 9000-12000 lb. hydraulic winch is what will be going on the front of my pickups...

There is plenty of argument over which is better, electric or hydraulic...proponents of electric winches argue that theirs will operate off the battery when the engine isn't running, while a hydraulic winch runs off the power steering pump, requiring the engine to be turning to operate.

Electric winches will not operate under water, they will drain the battery unless the engine is running, they overheat quickly...some have been known to fail permanently from overheating.

Hydraulic winches will work under water, they are usually more powerful, and the power steering pump is cooler when operating the winch than when steering. Mile Marker once winched a truck up and down a hill for hours to test their hydraulic winch...powering up and down the hill with the truck in neutral...all that resulted was a really frayed cable.

Hydraulic winches are more expensive though, so i'm going to get the Harbor Freight 9000 lb. electric winch, which closely resembles the electric winch Mile Marker also produces, for the front of my Toyota, then when i can afford the hydraulic winch the electric one will be put on the rear bumper.

There is also an argument for synthetic winch 'rope' as opposed to steel cable. While more expensive, the winch rope doesn't weigh much, so if it snaps it just falls to the ground. If a steel cable snaps the weight or 'mass' of the cable will keep it moving, and it can cut you in half. The rope requires an aluminum hawser fairhead as opposed to a steel roller fairhead. Another nice thing about rope is you can get more on the winch drum, it weighs less, and you'll never get a strand of cable stuck in the palm of your hand.

Hey!  Didn't mythbusters bust that myth!  :D  (cutting a person in 1/2, but doesn't mean I want to get hit with one anyways.)

Recommended is 1.5 the vehicle weight.  If you buy an inexpensive winch, get the biggest you can afford.

A snatch block is worth its weight in gold.

i run a warn m8000 on my 85 runner a friend has a m6000 on his 84 toy p/u and we both love em his m6000 will not pull a burried chevy in snow but an 8000 will. I would go no smaller than a 8000lb winch, Iand as my friends at fwp say "friends dont let friends buy mile markers."

Why yes they did! Completely busted. But..... As you said, I still would NOT want to be on the tail end of a broken cable  :ack: It could still do some serious damage  :heavy: and I'm personally always worried about losing an eye or both.

I've read quite a bit on winches and although there are tons of horror stories out there about mile marker/harbor freight/Wally World winches, I still wouldn't hesitate to buy one, since many seem to have no problems with theirs.

I have a 8274 on my 85 runner and it works awesome I bought it and it wasn't working for 100.00 I spend like 90 bucks thru Warn and have been using it for about 6yrs now no other problems.

I would reccomend replacing the battery cable though I went to the welding shop and bought 1/0 weilding cable for mine when I was rebuilding it, I figured the more voltage getting to it with the least amount of resistance was better.

A Warn M8000 would be a good starter winch.    :usa:

Yeah I've read that too.  But to be fair, I'm pretty sure that they use hydraulic winches and most people complaining about milemarker are talking about electric ones.

correct from what i've been told as well. milemarker makes great hydraulic winches, not so great electrics.
if you go electric and want it to last, go warn.

military even runs mile markers on the hummers. The only thing warn really has over mile marker is the line speed, plus there was more expensive.
When in doubt, throttle out!!!

A snatch block is a sheave, or pulley, that would be chained or strapped to a tree or another vehicle.  You run your winch line through the sheave and back to your vehicle.  It will double your pull but it will decrease the speed by half.  But if your in such a bad situation you need a block you wont care about how fast your winch pulls, but be aware your line will only be half as long since it's running to the sheave then turning back around and hooking to your truck.
