New exhast...too loud??
« on: Dec 27, 2006, 09:48:23 AM »
83 Yota 22R 4x4 stock engine.

I'm going to put a complete new exhaust system on my truck. The only mods will be a header. The muffler is a Magnaflow, 14" long with 2 1/4'' in and out, and no converter. This set up is a Christmas gift from my grandson. The shop doing the work says this is a great set up.
What do you guys and gals think, will this be too loud without the converter, I do not want a noisey ride.
Thanks for any input.
Dave

I have the same setup on my '87 2wd with a convertor and it is loud.  I can only imagine how much louder it woul be without a cat.  Whatever you do, make sure the tailpipe is routed out the side of the bed and not straight down.  Mine used to be straight down after the muffler and it reverberated between the bottom of the bed and the road like you wouldn't believe.  Don't get me wrong, I like the sound of my setup, but it's definately not quiet.

I hear that a basic turbo style muffler is a pretty quiet option, most likely much quieter than a magnaflow/flowmaster...

Thanks Budders, I was a bit leary of a magnaflow with no cat. If yours is loud with one mine will be far too loud without.  :yikes:

TRHS1980. I may trade the magnaflow for something a bit more tame and use a cat.
Thanks guys.

is running no cat legal where you live? i know a vehicle where i live wont pass emissions testing because of that, and because of that, most exhuast companies wont remove a working cat from a vehicle, and if they remove it, will only reinstall a new one

as far as being loud, i have an 85 22r and i just run a catco cat on it, has about a foot of pipe then nothing.... it is loud, but i like it :)

That is cause you live in stupid kommifornia.  I just did header, turbo muffler, no cat, 2.25 inch pipe on mine, it is just about perfectly quiet with a nice tone when reved up.  I am an old man when it comes to noise, I like teh quiet.

I live in a rural area of Northern kommifornia. We only check smog at the time of sale, then there are no more checks if you retain ownership or sell to a relative. Lot's of relatives here.  Cash works well in muffler shops...

That's exactly what I'm looking for, old guy quiet with nice tone. What brand muffler did you use?

I used a Walker replacement style turbo muffler.

I don't think he's sayin it's bad jim, he just lives in one of the areas where big brother isn't breathing over your shoulder examining every move.

So where do you live david?

Oh yea, and it will be loud, that's pretty close to what I'm running.  I have a header, no cat (non-catylist truck, not needed) and 2 glasspacks.  People still gripe that it's too loud though.

the fact that budders does not have a tail pipe make a huge difference in how loud it will be.  the exhaust you described should not be very loud at all

i have the same set up you are talking about it is not loud at all. but my buddy has it too and his is louder, because he has a turn down pipe the echoes under the bed. if you run a full tail pipe you will fine.

Actually, I do have a tailpipe now, and it's still loud.  Sorry, I guess I forgot to mention that.  I also have a lot of porting/polishing, TRD mid range cam and bigger valves now too - but that was all done after I got my exhaust figured out and didn't seam to make much difference in noise.

I guess when it really comes down to it, loud for some people is not loud for others.  I drive a lot of "stock" toyotas at the dealership I work at, so this is what I have to compare it to.

Lot's of diversity in sound level. I've pretty much decided to go with the original plan, magnaflow no cat. I'll go with the full length exhaust and no turn down and see how it sounds. Anything will be a vast improvement over what I have now. Old cat, old muffler and tiny tailpipe has taken a toll on performance.

Sounds good David.  Let us know what you think of it after it's done.
