4x4 trailer build
« on: Dec 14, 2006, 04:58:56 PM »
Well I started on a rework of my 4x4 trailer.  I built this trailer when I was in high school and never really finished it like I wanted.  Here are some of the plans.

I got a Roof Top Tent off IH8MUD for $225
On Board Air using a lincoln air ride compressor and 3 gallon tank
Either a generator or power inverter
RV reserve battery
16 gallon water tank
Storage Drawers in the rear
5 gallon propain tank
on board grill
Fuel can storage
33 or 35" tires (Not sure if the 35 will it)
Spring Over

I need to to make a roof for the trailer and will use some gas shocks like used on hoods of cars to hold up the top.

Here are the pics 3 days ago and some today.[/img]

Its not wood, its 1/4" steel.  Just a little rusty from water sitting in the bed in the winter.  Nothing a wire wheel wont take off.  I need to pick up some 1" square tubing for the roof.

Here is the tent that is going on top of it

The springs dont even compress at all.  If they dont work well then I will find some different ones.

Only thing I see, it's got a ball coupler.  That's a :nonono: for an offroad trailer.  You need to get a pintle hook and ring setup so it will have a better range of motion.

Yup that is in the plans, just dont know exactly what I am going to use.  I was trying to figure out what the adventure trailers are using, but can figure it out.  I thought this might be pretty cool, it would give me 360 degrees of movement.

That's more or less what you want.  For the truck side anyway.  Your local NAPA or ag shop/welding shop should have them available though.  I know I do.  I can't remember part numbers offhand, but you use that one, the split one, on the truck and there is a full circle one for the trailer.

You've already had one trailer pop off before, don't want that again. :gap:

I was trying to figure out what the adventure trailers are using,

a little bit different from the standard pintle hitch, this is from adventure trailers website. looks like they use more than one type

That is interesting how they use a receiver hitch on the trailer end.

I think you can make that.  You made the trailer, why not the hitch?

I believe standard pintles go for around 100 bucks......not sure what makes that design any better :dunno:
