Air Lockers
« on: Dec 12, 2006, 11:44:42 PM »
I am in the process of finding lockers for a 1990 Toyota.  I was thinking about getting ARB air lockers on advice from a buddy, does anyone know any info about them? The truck has about 6 inches lift and 35's with 4:88s and a V6. How hard is it to set up an air system, and then if you get a compressor can you also use that to air up the tires?

The ARB lockers are easy to plumb. Running the air lines to the 3rd member is not hard at all. Wiring up and mounting the compressor is fairly easy, and the only time consuming part. The instructions ARB supplies are great. 2-3 hours and you could have the compressor mounted, wired and the air lines run to the diffs.
Yes you can use just about any type of compressor, you just need a regulator for running the arb's off it. ARB also supplies instructions on how to install an air source other than their compressors
Personally I would buy their compact compressor to run air lockers and have a secondary compressor or CO2 for tires/tools/etc.

You don't want to use the ARB compressor for airing tires up. You will burn it up. I used to use my york on board air compressor for my ARB. I plumbed in a regulator just before the ARB switches and had a line going to my tank before the regulator. It worked great.
The only real downfall of an ARB is the potential for leaks. Some people of never had a problem and some of us have. The only time it's a real problem is when it's leaking in the locker itself. Then you have to tear apart the axle and the locker itself to fix it.

Thanks for the info, I think I am going to try and get an air system for the lockers and then an air system for the tires as well.  I was thinking about CO2 but I dont know of anywhere to fill up CO2 around here, so I think I am going with air.  I will post pics as soon as possible of my truck and undertaking, Thanks

u can get CO2 any many places u wouldnt think of, like a fire extingisher store or a beverage distruibtor not to mention airgas. i have been runnin my arb on CO2 for almost 5 years on the same 5 lb tank. i would get the co2 for the arb and get a compressor for the tires

I have an air locker in my 4runner and wouldn't go woth any thing else. I hit the switch and it only cycles when it first airs up. Never cycles again unless i shut and then turn it back on. I only run the new arb compressor so it has a small tank on the comp. it self.

X's 2 I would use anything else for the front dif at least. Mine is currently my DD and really like still haveing an open rear for the street. I would recomend if your gonna use one of ARB's compressors get the mini one it's cheaper it'll run both lockers but the big thing is the mini has an additional bracket that connects the tank to the unit. Which will help prevent the tank from warping. I have had 2 of the larger compressors now and will not get another. The last one was warped in less than 6 months.
99 TACO 2.7 4CYL  HP d-60 front d-70 rear 5:13's and detroits 63" chevy rear springs second gen rears up front.
