swap options into '85 toy 4WD
« on: Feb 09, 2004, 11:32:20 PM »
hi all

got a little project on my hands. inhereted an '85 EFI toy 4WD. i'm looking to do a full restoration (actually already under way).

anyhow, the truck came without engine and with a broken trans. i've picked up an engine/trans from an '89 (22R which won't work 'cause my truck is EFI) but i'd like to know what my options are as far as swapable motors (only toyota of course).

i can live with a slightly modded 22RE but (a) i still need to track one down, (b) i know that i'll only live with it for a little while until i'll get sick of the power/lbs. ratio

i have access to a 7MGE swap (donor cressida) but i have concerns about california smog legality (car to truck swap).

i'd like (at least) the power from the 4 cylinder T100/tacoma DOHC motor (i forget the engine code) which if i remember correctly was 150 HP with a nice torque curve+ bulletproof.

i would love to go 5VZ-FE.

welding, relocating mounts, etc. is not a problem.

what do either of these swaps entail?is retaining my trans a possibility? i know there are issues with exhaust, pan clearances, etc. do i need to swap engine+trans?

any help with this would be *greatly* appreciated. i'd like to plan this out and get it right. TIA!

I think Chris did a little run down a while back on tranny and motor compatability in this forum about a month ago. Try a search it was some pretty good info

hey the 89 motor will work fine just bolt ur intake too it  its all the same just a diff way of getting fuel too it.
If you didn't make it, and it ain't broke, you didn't try hard enough.

that's why i'm thinking swap since i'm basically looking for a whole motor anyhow

thanks. actually i don't have *any* of the parts for EFI (i.e. injectors, etc.) so it's either a whole motor or a swap.
