86-87 turbo with auto. trans
« on: Dec 10, 2006, 05:21:34 AM »
I've kind of searched but never really found any info, but my question is: If the 1986-87 turbo Toyota's had the heavier r151 manual trans. then are the automatic trans that come in the turbo trucks any different than the trans in the regular trucks.

My luck, I was hoping it might be worth a few coins more when I sell it. :)On the up side Toyota auto's must be heavy duty.

I remember talking to a guy at a Landcruiser shop and he told me that Toyota used the same auto in Landcruisers that went into the 2.5 ton trucks overseas.  He told me that the mini truck auto was based on the same design,so if its overkill I doubt they changed it for the turbo.

About the only difference between the 4cyl. non-turbo auto's and the turbo is in the diff, V-6 diffs went in them.

Yeah, the Turbo Autos got the A340H, same as the v6's later on.   It's a decent tranny, but not sought-after like the R151.  IIRC, many of the 3.0V6 4Runners also got the A340-H.

the auto didn't need to be beefier in the turbo trucks, they were also used in the 4.0 cherokees  with more power and torque. even in the jeep they are just as dependable. no reason for beefier auto.
