98 v6 taco power steering nightmare
« on: Dec 05, 2006, 08:21:27 PM »
i have a  problem with my 98 taco power steering :help: :help: :help: s.a.s. with 89 steering box and have burned up 3 ps pumps, replaced the steering box and made new high and low pressure lines. the lines are not hooked up backwards. when a new pump is installed it works for 5 minutes and then its done. please help or any advice is appreciated. is there a pressure difference between the two different systems or something to do with the original rack and pinion steering.

You could have a blockage in the line or possible cooler if it has one. I haven't had any problems with mine. I have a 95 Tacoma. I ran the ifs box for years with no problems. Im now running a full hydro system with the stock pump with no problems.

I helped a friend sas his taco. We tried using the trans cooler in the rad as a power steering cooler, but it wouldn't work. The trans cooler needed more pressure than the pump would put out. His powersteering fluid boiled out of the resivor till we switched back to the stock cooler. :dunno:  Other than this mishap the 90 or so steering box on his 2.7 liter equiped taco works flawlessly!

It sounds like there is not enough pressure to run the gear housing. Try and change out the 98 power steering pump's pressure port union, flow control valve and spring to the 89s. Best of luck.
