will a front drive shaft from a 86 4 runner work on a 81 pick up  im looking for a spare one

No and yes but not whithout work. The 86 drive shaft is longer has different bolt patterns and may not work at a steep enough angle whith out being clearanced. All these things can be modded to make it work but it may not be worth it to you to do all that. :dunno:

Take both and make 2 square shafts.  That way you'll have a matching spare if one breaks!
