?? about v6 and installing 4.7 gears
« on: Jan 27, 2004, 08:10:36 AM »
i have a 88 4runner with a 5-speed and chain driven t/c.  i can't afford a ultimate crawler yet but i would like to install a 4.7 gear driven t/c this summer.  i know that i have to order marlin's v6 adaptor to mate the tranny to the new t/c.  do i have to do any other modifications?  mainly to the driveshaft.  it will probably be still IFS at this time too.

thanks,
randy

This case will be 1/2" longer and may require you to trim the splines on the drive shaft or have it cut down. It should fit just fine if you truck doesn't sag or if you have a shackle lift. You will need to cut and splice the wires for the 4wd light switch. Thats about it. Also 88 v6 4runner has the same rear drive shaft flanges as a 86-87 turbo truck. When you get the top shift case you need the rear flange will be different and the flange on your V6 chain case will not fit the gear drive case. You need a 86-87 turbo t-case rear flange.

thanks for the info.  what years for the top shift mounts come in?  and do you guys have any of those flanges.  those turbo t-c's are hard to find in my area.  i just swapped in a driveshaft from a 3rd 4runner.  do those flanges work with the geared t-c's?

Randy,

Top shift 21 spline t-cases were used in 81-83 trucks and 85-95 EFI models. 84-88 carbed t-cases were 21 spline forward shift.

The t-case/drive shaft/diff flange bolt patterns are different between 83 back and 84 forward, FWIW.

Installing the 4.7 gear set is pretty easy. Didn't take me too long and I had never cracked open a t-case before.

didn't 89-95 pickups with a w56 have a forward shift case as well?  i know there were years that the w56 had a t-case shifter in the tailhousing

Theres a 91 in my shop that has a forward shift on it.  I believe Marlin said it depends on your year, efi or carb, and seat arrangment.  ie bench buckets etc.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??
