automatic hubs to manual hubs
« on: Oct 01, 2006, 10:37:32 AM »
Hi my names Nick, and im 16. I just got an 1985 toyota and it has automatic locking front hubs (the ones were you put your truck in 4 wheel and it engages the hub than to disangage you put your truck in 2 wheel and back up for 200 feet). I was wondering what i need in order to go to manual hubs? My dad thinks i just need the locking hub part and it will bolt right on? Thank you

all you need is the locking hub. Here's a write up. Shouldn't take more than an hour (assuming you know how to deal with the cone washers  :shocking:)

EDIT: looks like you might need an extra washer, nut or two. That write up uses WARN hubs, but the AISIN hubs should be the same just better . Still checking for a write up using AISIN Hubs

Yotatech has write ups for both hubs.

On my 84 with auto's I did the Warn swap.  I had to also buy their conversion kit (two large nuts and a washer I believe, if im remembering correctly) to work in cunjuction with the hubs.  Not sure about the Aisin hubs.

But definatly get rid of them.

Follow this thread.

Changing from auto locking hubs to manual locking hubs was my first modification I did to my 85' EFI Toyota Pickup. And I was a complete newb to Toyota 4x4's.  It was very easy. Taking the auto locking hubs was very easy. Just get the right manual Hubs and you will be golden.
