So...ummm...yeah, this sucks
« on: Sep 27, 2006, 06:34:06 PM »
Found this in my rear case and there is a little in my front. I'm thinking just let it drain for a few days and fill it back up with oil. I think it happened when I was swapping everything over the past several weeks. If so then I've only got about 40 miles of use with the water in the oil. Any one reccomend something for getting most if not all of the contaminated oil out? I think I may have to remove my front case since there is no drain. Maybe I can remove one of the lower mounting bolts. :dunno:

I would def. drain it, put in new oil and take it for a ride to cycle the new stuff through, then drain it again.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

Thats what I was thinking. I just don't want my rear case to go out, cuz it has my 4.7's. I got a spare case for the front though.

I dunno how good it would be for the cases, but with bikes, we take and put in some lacquer thinner and about a half quart of oil, run it for about 30 sec or so, drain, and refill with fresh oil.  It doesn't hurt the wet clutch or the trans gears, but I don't know about how the Toy case would react to it.  You might try WD 40 (it's hygroscopic).

Tice, there is a drain on the bottom of your front case, I seen it there myself...fill up the cases, both of them, run them around the block a couple times and drain again.  That's my suggestion.

x 2 I didn't clearance my shift collar enough when I installed my 4.7 set amd had to grind it in the case, so I got alot of metal in there. I just sprayed like 2 cans of brake clean in it and changed the oil twice, no problems.

This happens all the time here in the swamp lands. Best thing to do after going off the deep end is to let it sit overnight and crack the drain plugs on all the gear boxes and diff's to see if water is the first to come out.

If you catch it soon enough you can drain the water out without having to change the oil, BUT if the oil has turned milky it is too late.

Just drain, fill, drive and repeat. Also check to make sure your seals aren't leaking cause seals that leak oil will also leak water.

If you know you are going to be swamping a lot extend your breathers for your diff's and gearboxes to just under your hood by the firewall or your snorkel if you have one.

Avoid using thinners, brake clean, gas, diesel or any other type of solvent inside the cases. This will cause the seals to swell and shrink making them leak. also when they get hard from this they will wear grooves in your flanges making more leaks.

BTW, If you are using synthetic gear oil and play in water STOP. Synthetic oil is hydroscopic (like a sponge) and the water will mix with the gear oil making it useless. At least good ole 85-90 will have some lubricating properties when wet.
