axle questions
« on: Sep 22, 2006, 11:30:24 AM »
I have found an IFS rear axle that I want to get for my 85 4runner the problem is it has 4.56 gears in it. What should I do? Will it just bolt up? Or will I have to change my rear shaft?

It will bolt up, however, you might want to change the spring perches to get the correct driveline angle.  Also, you will want to get some 1.5" Spacers for the front to match the width of the rear.

You can take your ring and pinion out the rear of your current housing and put it into the new wider housing.

yep,  or  if you have stock thirds  just get some 4.56 gears for your front  and :woohoo:

but swapping the thirds  would be best

I do have access to two spare 4.37's What would you think would be the better gearing the 4.10's, 4.37's or get a new 4.56? I have a ford 5.0, C4 Tranny, and Jeep Dana 20 Transfercase?

whats in your front axle now??  i would just swap in what ever matches the front,   you dont need the low r&p  with a v8,  you just need strong

You probably won't notice a difference between 4.37's and 4.10's.

Your e brake cables/ brake lines will also need to be swapped.

I currently have 4.10's and it is not what I would have thought with the v8 it really seems underpowered in my opinion, not really underpowered I guess the highway driving is horrible. I only drive this 4runner to and from the trails so I am not sure if i'm too worried about the gearing but it will be a long drive to Moab.

One more question, I just found a v6 third with 4.10's for $30 will this bolt up to my driveshaft I currently have or is it different? And I am planning on running an elocker rear. Will it bolt up to the early model V6's just the same as the later model Tacomas and 4runners? I'm just thinking for the $30 it may save me some time instead of modifying my 4cyl housing to fit the elocker.

Most early V6 thirds like 3.0 have the same bolt patters as the 4 cyl. There are some years that wont match, mostly first gens and recent models, but I couldn't tell you which. If you do find that it wont bolt up, it's very easy to re-drill the flange and as long as you space the holes reasonably you wont weaken the flange. You could also just buy a $35 Marlin tripple drilled flange and never worry about a drive shaft bolting up again... http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/diff/pickup_diff.htm

Its best to stick with as high a gear as possible because to higher gears are thicker and will hold up to the torque your 5.0 puts out better. I would not recommend going lower than 4.56's. If you do decide to re-gear, look into buying a cryo-treated set or getting them treated for that extra strength...http://www.longfieldsuperaxles.com/
