In my limited research, I have found that you still need to pass smog even with a green sticker. Technically. So many don't know the regs so it is always overlooked. If you can't pass smog, you should be issued a RED sticker. Good to ride Oct -March??.

so if my quad has a green sticker i have to smog it ?     once you go green sticker on a vheicle  it cannot be driven on the street and the Cat HAS to be removed.   it no longer has to be smoged..   red stickers are for 2 strokes and can only be ridden  certian times of the year.

I think you're taking it too literally.  If I remember correctly, there were/are actually some 4 strokes that are red sticker also, so it's not a straight down the middle thing.  You can check this link and the various links you find on the page.  You can actually find out a lot, including registering a race/track only vehicle for transport to and from the track.

i dont know how many computer sleauths we have on here, but it clearly states on the dmv website that you can register a street vehicle for off highway use

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/vr_info.htm#BM2518

Off highway vehicles (OHV) subject to off-road registration.

OHVs are vehicles such as racing motorcycles, trail bikes, mini bikes, dune buggies, all-terrain vehicles, jeeps, and snowmobiles. These vehicles are operated exclusively off public roads and highways on lands that are open and accessible to the public. They do not require regular registration, but must display an identification plate or device issued by DMV.

It is not necessary to register a vehicle for both on-highway and off-highway use. Valid on-highway registration allows the vehicle to be operated on and off the highway. Vehicles registered for on-highway use only may be subject to a "use fee" if operated in OHV parks.

To change a California registered vehicle from on-highway use to OHV, you will need to:

Visit a DMV office. Make an appointment for faster service.
Provide the California Certificate of Title.
Pay the original off-highway vehicle application fee (registration fee).

EDIT: here is the link to the schedule of fees for above http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/fees/off_highway.htm

Justine, if it doesn't pass it's undoubtedly fixable, so I'd hate to see you making a bigger problem of it than it needs to be.  I'd be willing to bet that if you had a check done and sent the papers to ryan, he'd likely be able to give you some good ideas what to look for.  The trick to keep it from becoming a gross poluter in cali is to have them do a tailpipe first, with explicit directions to abort the test if it fails.  This keeps it from going into the system and ending up at your local not so friendly ref.  I've done this and saved myself with my corolla gts, and the tech was even able to tell me what typically causes failures in those cars.  The egr was super plugged, so he said to pull it and the lines off, clean out all the carbon and bring it back.  Done, fixed and smogged that day.  I always have them do the tailpipe first and make sure they abort if it doesn't pass.

Since I own older cars, I always take this route first as well.

Red stickers are for 4 strokes. The green sticker says it is an off road vehicle. Not to be driven on the street. There is no smog program for OHV except Red sticker, and that is for brand new vehicles only.

I need to to look that stuff up again.

real quick...
