Cromoly vs Birfield elimenator kit
« on: Sep 05, 2006, 12:57:00 AM »
I am looking at rebuilding a 81 front axle with 5.29 gears and it is Lincoln locked.  Does anyone have any ideas about what is better Birfield eliminator kit or the Cromoloy Birfs.  I currently have you guessed it a broken birf :yikes:

:welcome: to the site, there are tons of threads on this, and everyone does have their opinions on it....

from everything i have read about both of them, bobby longs longfield axles are superior, in fact, marlin actually is a distributor for them now

IIRC, the birfield eliminator basically turns your 'yota axle into a Dana 44.  They're about equal in strength, so compared to stock birfs, you're fine.  However, I think the eliminator requires an odd size axle shaft, so if you break a shaft on the trail, its a bit harder to find a person who may have an extra one, if you don't.  Also, I thought the eliminator kit was discontinued?
Don't quote me on this, This is off memory and recollection.  I personally haven't done the research, but I know when I go SA, I'm going with the 30s

If you're going to step up to 30spline longs, I'd definitely go that way rather than the eliminator.  Check out bobby Long's website, he's got some strength charts that are pretty impressive, and I know a lot of people run them with some good size tires and are very happy with them

:biggthumpup:Thanks for the info.  I will probably go with the cromoly, just wanted to hear what folks think of the eliminator kit first.  I don't know anyone who runs them so kinda figure they probably arn't to good.  I will be running 35's for now but moving up to 37's when they wear out.

That is the same as asking D44 (eliminator) vs. D60 (30-spline longfield), which is a no-brainer question in terms of strength

30-spline longfields transform a 8" Toyota axle into the strength of a D60.

If you ask me, I would NEVER run universal joints over cv joints unless there was a huge significant gain. Using D44 axles is definitely not what I would ever want. Especially when a Toy Birfeld is stronger and maintenance free.

Yea, I have a birf eliminator kit and it worked well for just playing around in mud a stuff, but I had my 4Runner out in the rocks and I'm pretty sure I blew one of my front axles because I heard a big bang and my front end locked up. I unlocked my hubs and backed up and now it is free, but doesn't want to steer one way anymore.

I'd say stay away from them unless you running a very light truck, Longs are where I am going next.

i have the chromo inners and birfields with 36's and they rock. no problems at all. i blew the inner driverside shaft the birfield and the end of the shaft on the birfield and the hub.... so i bought the inners and birfields and a hub. the housing is kind of scarred up. and the inner seal leaks(maybe bent housing too) but other than that no problems. and i have abused them many of times

What is left of my kit, it held up for five years until I put some IROKs on. This kit was made better then anyone that is out there today, it had Currie D-44 high alloy axles. I wondered when it would go, that is why I always carried inner axles, two birfs and two spindles. DS went first and the shock load took out the u-joint, bent the ears, broke the locking hub cap on the PS. Also chipped the R & P.

Same thing happened to my buddy who was running the Birf Elim kit. His Spicer Ujoint survived no problem but it came apart in almost the same exact fashion. He was running 37s with an ARB front when he broke it on a bypass at Fordyce (IIRC Winch hill 1 bypass?)

Mine were 760X I think the number was. I got them from Jess at Hi-Angle and he told me they were the strongest D-44 u-joint at the time.
