I'm starting my carb'd 350 engine swap in my 1985 Toyota, I got the body lift and motor mounts, just wondering what I can get rid of from the engine compartment, I don't want to just yank everything out. What electronics will I reuse? the fuse box i'm sure, but the coil? ignition control box thing under the coil? what can I just get rid of?

Another question, any of you engine swap guys keep AC? how did you do it, can i reuse my toyota compressor? lots of questions, but i'm new to the whole engine swap game.

Thanks, Daniel

I am going to put a 3.4L engine in place of my 3.0L, I was told you need the AC compressor from the New engine.  So you would probly need the chevy compressor, but you could always do the swap and put the compressor in later if it will still be accessable.

anyone help me out here? I know some of you guys know what i can ditch and what i HAVE to keep. One of you "I've done 64 350 swaps" please speak up!

Enough rant.

You can ditch anything you want to in all reality.  Just all depends on what you want to know.  I can answer any Q's you have just need some details..... Like do you want to use as much of the factory harness as possible?  etc.  To answer your first Q yes you will need to keep the factory fuse box.  Yes you can keep your A/C.  The coil and ignitor you will not reuse.  You will need to use another ignition like an HEI or mallory distributor.  What else??? :dunno:

The main thing is, how can I reuse my A/C, can i use the stock compressor? Are there brackets to mount it to the 350?

I'm mainly wanting to know what i can take out of the engine bay now, before i put anything in there. Now i know i can pull the coil, and just leave the wires to hook to the new ignition system correct? I've never done an engine swap so this is all new to me.

another question is cooling, can i fit a new v-8 radiator like the one from NWOR with a fan up front, there is no option but to run the radiator under the hood. How did you deal with cooling issues?

Thanks, D.

White_Trash, could you send me some more pics of your swap? or others possibly you've done, i need as much info as I can, i want to be as ready as I can manage. my email is [email protected]

Thanks in advance, D.

I'm also playing with the idea of fenderwell headers, anyone seen these or know where to get a set? I don't want to make another set of headers myself, it wasn't fun.

If you have any plans on being able to turn your tires dont do fenderwell headers! The floor board is way too close for them to work.  I have Hooker block huggers and I like them a lot.
1.  How much suspension lift do you have?
2.  Where are you planning on putting the radiator?
3.  Do you have power steering?,  do you want to keep it?
4.  What ignition are you planning on using?
5.  Was your truck carbed or fuelie?
this is just a quick thought off the top of my head, see I can help you out but only as much as you help yourself ;)  I need details!
Oh yeh you wanted to see other engine swaps Ive done ....heres one.

Here's the answer to your questions:

1. I have around 5 inches of suspension lift, little over 3 in springs, the rest in shackles. 3" body lift is in the process of being put on as well.
2. radiator has to run up front, no question about it.
3. No power steering, and don't need it.
4. ignition is a good question, i have no idea.
5. my truck was a carb'd 22r

My 350 motor comes with block huggers on it, as well as the original radiator from the car it's coming out of, the car is a '64 Impala, but the motor is a crate gem. I don't think that radiator will fit my truck, but I know it cools the motor, so it might be a starting point for some fabrication. I'm thinking about going with a northwest offroad v-8 swap radiator which bolts in the stock location, and running electric fans.

Lemme know what you think.

here is a picture I got today of the motor sitting in the 1968 Impala. He said I will be getting everything under the hood that goes with the motor or controls the motor.

your link doesnt work.  what distributor cap does the engine have?  Is it about 4 in. around, or is it about 6.5 in. around? if it has a big cap you have HEI if its small you have points you can use either setup.  Depending on how far you want to mount the engine forward it would be better to have the HEI but you can also use the points setup but I would replace the points with Pertronix.

Brandon

take your wiring harness out and follow everything from the computer in your truck now and remove it. That's what I did, something to do in front of the tv one night :)

I swapped in a 4.3L, NWOR 6 inch spring lift, 3 inch body lift.700R4 tranny. I pretty much removed every thing from the engine comp. Ign, wiring harness from the computer.I didn't have to cut  the drive shaft. However the distributor cap is a close fit with relation to the fire wall. I am using the mallory unilite {great item} dist cap is small. If I went with the HEI I think I would have had to take a ball peen to the fire wall. Otherwise you have to grind off the old motor mounts...I'll write more later

I also had to cut the bend {reweld it straight} out of the line that goes into the steering box. Can't remember why. But I had to do that.

The air compress will have to be Chevy.Because of the braket and pully combatablity. Some guys use the compress as an air pump for refilling there tires. With my mod I removed everthing and anything that was not nessary.

I can send you pic's if you want.
