84 22R Head bolts?!?

 :headscratch:I was told by my local machine shop today that I should replace my head bolts and not reuse them :dunno: I have a 84 Toyota factory tech manual and it dosen't say anything about these bolts being "torgue to yeld bolts" :shake_head: Why can't I just run a thread cleaner die over them and reuse them ??? They also want to sell me after market head bolts :nerv: :nerv: I think if I should replace them I'll stick with OEM Toyota head bolts :thumbs:

did not change out my 83 head bolts, think they are just trying to jack up your bill.

Head bolts are re used alot, but they are not supposed to be put back in if there taken out.  Get new ones or you my get bad torqe readings and blow gasket.

Well I know the British junk :crazy: (Sorry Europe guys) uses what they call "Torque to Yeld" Bolts, If you reuse them they'll break off :nonono:I got a early 80's jeep with a Brit 4 Banner with the head off, it had three broken off head bolts :reg:I had to drill them out and Helicoil the holes. I never heard this about Toyota stuff.  :love: :maddest:Jap's

The 20-22R head bolts are not torque to yield, and Toyota does not advise replacement evertime the head is removed.
I have reused head bolts for years unless they are rusted, and then I replace them with used ones!
In todays world of fancy engines, almost ever engine uses torque to yield headbolts :hammer:
The machine shop was playing it safe when they told you to replace them. Look them over carefully, and if they look good, you know what I would do.

Thanks Marlin, I defenitly respect your input :thumbs: This machine shop is repitable - they do warranty work for the local Toyota dealers and I never heard anything negitive about them. I just had a 85 EFI block, crank, rods and head done by them this past summer and they never said anything to me about head bolts then. I was concerned and wanted more info on the matter. They look good just need cleaned up. Thanks again :yupyup: :wave:

Just a input- LC offers a head stud get for about $140.00 a little pricey

Hey, Marlin, thanks for posting up here, I just posted a similar question on my thread, also- Summit has an ARP head stud kit for 112, and a head bolt price of 26 bucks for the set. Are studs worth it? that's my question..
85' 4Runner- SWAPPED--Dodge Caravan IFS-front and rear, 235R13's on each corner, hubcaps. Toyota Corona drivetrain swap. Locked, left and right side doors, with the windows up.

Studs are always better, but it makes it hard to remove the head especially in the truck.:confounded:
I feel it is a waste of money unless you are running a ultra high compression, high performance motor.

Hey sure thing Marlin, I think I can speak for the Toyota wheeling community by saying thanks for providing such great products and product support!

I also don't think that I'll be using head studs-it doesn't sound like I'll need them on my basically stock application. Thanks again!

 :psss:I talked to the machine shop yesterday and the owner answered the phone. I asked him why his guy recommended new bolts,  :confounded: He said it's typical see rusty bolts with pits on them and dosen't recommend reusing them :yipes: I finally had time to take a close look at my bolts (My heads not back from machine shop yet) and :yupyup: two of them is rusty and pitted but thats ok - I got about 60 more to choose from  :greengrin:
