No clutch fluid...but where'd it go?
« on: Aug 15, 2006, 04:10:48 PM »
So I hop in my 'runner this morning to go to work (22re) and I notice the clutch pedal doesn't quite feel right. After I got home today I started by checking the fluid, which I always check when I am checking oil, coolant, etc. and it is bone dry. Absolutly nothing. There are no signs of it on my freshly painted garage floor, and the clutch felt fine when I drove the truck home last night. I followed the hard line all the way to the bell housing but found no trace of leaking fluid. Any ideas where it could have gone? Also, when I fill it, will I need to bleed the system? Thanks in advance.
-Brian

Yep, check the clutch master on the inside of the firewall. Check and see if there is fluid under your carpet.

i have had a couple slaves go bad on me check that, and yes you have to bleed. mine on my v6 wouldnt leak at all till i was hard on the clutch then it would all dump out at the slave all at once, makes it hard to find leaks if it all leaks out at once every once in a while.

Thanks guys, I definately found the leak all over my carpet, does that mean that there is a bad o ring where the shaft goes in and out? If so I would guess the unit needs to be replaced. Otherwise is it okay to fill for now and replace when I get a day off?

While I'm asking dumb questions...do you bleed a clutch the same way you do brakes?

you need a new  clutch master cylinder,  and yes  bleed it from the slave cylinder bleed screw,  just like you would your brakes

watch out with the aftermarket ones, when i used to work @ a shop, the aftermarkets ones were a crapshoot.... 1/2 of them worked, half of the time

Piece of cake, to bleed you can gravity bleed most of the air out then do it like you would the brakes till you get your pedal pressure back, you may need to adjust the lock nut eather way for proper pedal play or the way you like your pedal.
