How many leafs to run in my new front pack?
« on: Aug 14, 2006, 06:57:39 PM »
I'm currently building my new front leaf spring pack for my 85 4runner after i bent my pass side spring.  I have the pack set up like this so far 1st, stock toy rear main leaf. 2nd, 2nd leaf stock toy rear. 3rd, 3rd leaf of 2wd f-150s. 4th, 3rd leaf stock toy rear. 5th, 4th leaf 2wd f-150.  My question is do you think i should add another or even 2 more leafs?  Or will my pack be strong enough just as a 5 leaf pack (I'm going to be running 38x12.20x15 tsl).  Any help or advice would be great, thanks.

what are the conditions of the leafs you used, were they beat to hell in their previos life or were they a truck that sat in a garage?

Not to sure, i think it would be safe to say they were beat to hell, cuz both spring hanger bolts were frozen in the bushings, and the rear bushing where very beat. but the leafs did have good arch to them so im not sure.  I ran a 4 leaf pack b4 which was stock rears and a short 3inch aal, it was plenty soft just not strong.

im surprised you had a 3" aal and it was soft and not strong... i have an aal on my truck and that thing supports all sorts of weight..... i can actually make my stock leafs W around it... eek.....

Yeah weird i know, its a pro comp 3 inch aal and even when i had it in the rear when i had stock rear springs it flexed really well.  The weight up front and just from beating on it for awhile finally bent them.  But i just got my bushings in today so i just have to get bolts and finish cleaing/painting my new leafs ill find out how the 5 leaf pack works for me.  Thanks for the help guys.  :beerchug:

you need to add 2 more leaves to have the proper stagger setup.

the space between the ends of each spring.. to much and they will bend  and break.. to little stagger and the leafs will be to long and bend aswell.. so you cant run a long bottom leaf..   the bottom leaf should only be 8 to 12" long..  i'll see if i can find a pic of my springs to show you

oh  yea  ok i get what your saying,  yea  my front spring pack has a 12 inch or so long bottom leaf,  they "stagger"  nice,  the back  my top 3 are the same length then my "stagger" starts  down to a leafe thats a tad shorter thanmy factory divingboard, which i kept  because i carry loads quite often

Ok I get what you are saying, I cut my leaves down today so they have some stagger but I think my last leaf is like 18 inches maybe.  So I think I will throw in anther leaf, perhaps the 2nd leaf of the f-150s cut down to around 12 inches.  Also I got all new polyurethane bushing, I had to burn out the old front spring hanger bushings but that left just the sleeve.  The sleeve needs to be removed to get the new bushings in, I've done this before on my rear pack and used a sazall.  This was a pain in the ass, I tried using a air hammer with a chisel bit on it today at work but that didn't work.  So I was wondering if there is any other ways to get it out?  thanks again for the help guys ill get a pic up tomorrow of my new spring pack.
