Hey Let's "Rock Crawl"
« on: Aug 02, 2006, 10:22:20 AM »
Hey guys,

The other day something occurred to me.....

"Rock Crawling"

We all say it, there are magazines named after it, and even TV has shows for it. But have you ever thought about the term "Crawl" before? Or better yet, oh say in 1994 did you and your buddies used to say "Hey, lets go Crawling this weekend!"

My point is this: Maybe you used to say that before 1995, but it definately was not a house hold term like it is now. Remember in 1995 a little company called Marlin Crawler was born.

Whenever I see some Jeep site talking about how to Crawl, its funny that they are using a term that was created by a Toyota company, Marlin Crawler.

What do you guys think about this? Am I crazy? I seriously believe that it is because of Marlin that the term "Rock Crawling" became so popular.

I'd have to agree on that Mike, before the gears came we were 4 wheeling, after some point in the mid 90's the term rock crawling came into play. I remember the 1st year Marlin brought his truck to TDS with the gears, everyone behind him was pissed. I talked with several people that warned of being behind you guys and saying, "Don't follow them unless you plan on spending a lot of time waiting, that damn red truck goes as fast as a desert tortoise crossing in front of you on a trail".

I think you're right mike.  But then again, with a father not much into wheelin, and me only being in 5th grade in '95 I don't know if I'd know anyway :hahaha:

I was graduating from High School then. The first time I saw Marlin's truck was in '96.I think it was either at a Cal 4 Wheel event,or at TDS.The side of the truck used to read "Don't gear down, double up" in yellow letters. Then I saw the truck in Petersen's I believe, under best year Toyotas.I've seen his truck alot in the past 9 or 10 years, but yeah I believe that may've been right around the time I started hearing the term "crawling".Before that it was "let's go wheelin' at The Canyon on Sunday" *RockSurfer, you've been there*.My dad introduced me to wheelin' at a very young age,but it was never refered to as "crawling"...

It's funny that you brought this subject up mike, cuz this ran through my mind a while back. I've wheeled with my father when he first bought his 85 runner which I now own.  Back then Downey offroad was the shizz nits for toyota's.  Marlin "Crawler" is the first time ever heard of the the word being refered as offroading.

Of all the rigs to use as an example of a "rock crawler", Wikipedia uses this......... A Toyota 4Runner with 33 inch tires and a 3 inch body lift  I thought that was kind of funny. they don't make any brand references at all in the definitions which is interesting too.  Wikipedia is the :pokinit:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_crawling

Only you as an infant crawled, I was the other baby beating you with the snoopy doll.

Ohhh man this is so aggravating to me. Marlin has made a lot of mistakes, like not patenting the dual case idea for instance, and never trade marketing the term "Rock Crawling" and "Crawl" and "Crawling" just really gets me, especially when I see jeep shops calling their own events after the term.

I am sure its just a personal problem I have that only few may understand...
