Speedometer issues?!

alright i know it isnt a 4wd toyota, but i have a 2wd '89 that i just picked up and the speedometer doesnt work as of right now.  i pulled out the gauges to make sure it wasnt back there, then i pulled the cable out with it.  The cable spins completely free, i havent gotten a chance to see if the output off the tranny is even spinning, but my main question is if the gear is shot in the transmission can i change it easily or is this something that i need to pull it out for??  also any other ideas of why it might not be working?  im assuming its the gear.

mine did that too and i just chane the thing that the cable goes on to the trany

how did you get that thing out though.  i am at the point right now with pliers and vise grips and that piece does not want to come out.  yes i took the clip off.
