scan tool
« on: Jul 11, 2006, 06:14:23 AM »
I am getting ready to buy a scan tool but can not find one that does second gen Toyota EFIs and OBDII.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I am willing to spend up to $800 but don't want to waste my money if I can't check my Yota.  Still trying to sort through all of the different products out there.  Help.

second gen toys 84-89 arn't obdII and don't need a scanner.
What year is your truck?
You put a jumper wire across a terminal and count the number of times the check engine light comes on.
A tacoma would be obdII.

'84-'89 4runners are 1st generation and do not use OBDII. I assume you are talking about a '90-'96 2nd gen 'runner, in which case I believe most of them ('92 and newer :headscratch:) do in deed use OBDII. I was under the impression that all scanners were sort of universal and would work with any OBDII capable vehicle, but what do I know, I am still playing with little paper clips under my hood.

The 4Runner is an 85, none OBD.  I have been reading the codes using the jumper, but I would like to actually be able to monitor the output of the different sensors.  I want a scanner that will do older Yotas and OBDIIs so that I can do all of my vehicles.
