82 22r to g56 tranny adaptor
« on: Dec 29, 2003, 12:20:25 AM »
Right now i have a blown tranny in my 82 yota which is a l50 tranny.  The problem is finding a good tranny for under 500 bucks.  I have a 1985 engine and tranny from a swap that i did a couple months back.  i am wondering if there are adaptor plats so that i could just put the 85 tranny on the 82 motor?

you dont need an adaptor plate or anything of the sort it is a bolt together deal.  the catch is the later trannys are (51/2 in.?) longer.  so you would have to move your transfer case mount rearward,  lengthen your front driveline. Shorten the rear etc.

jared,

Also, is the 85' setup Carburated or Fuel Injected? If it is carburated, then it is a G54 transmission that uses a forward shifting transfercase, but if it is a fuel injected setup, then its a W56 transmission that uses a top shifting transfercase...

Now my point is that if its a G54 transmission (carburated 85) then the transfercase shift handle will mount in a different location then your 82 t/case shifter location - so you may have to modify your floor board, or if you want to use your 82 t/case, then you will have to make a plug for the forward-shift style t/case shifter base on the back of the transmission. But now if you use a 82 t/case behind a 85 transmission (any 1979-1993 t/case behind any 1984+ trans) then be sure to use the gasket from the 82 t/case as the 84+ gaskets are taller and will only seal the t/case by about 1/8th inch at the top!!

WT has the most important point with the aluminum (1984+) transmission being 4-inches longer which will result in relocating the crossmember and adjusting both your drivelines......

Everything else will bolt right up. Splines, bolt patterns, reverse shift light switch, ect..

Regards,
BigMike
