I think you're right, maybe he had a hybrid :dunno:  I'm just wondering how hard it'd be to fab up your own supercharger from junkyard parts.  Don't a lot of gm cars, like sc 3.8s come with eatons?  I'm just curious how hard one of these would be to set up yourself, realizing that if I have to ask the question, I've probably just answered it for myself.

Yes, the 3.8 Thunderbird uses the M90 Eaton Blower. The Eaton Blower that LC and Camden use on the 'R' engine is ONLY the Eaton M45. The TRD Supercharger that is used on both the 3.4 and the 2.7 is ONLY the Eaton M62.

In my opinion, if you want to do it right, don't play games with turning small Superchargers at high rpms, and instead run the M90 from a wrecking yard on your 2.0, 2.4, 2.7, 3.0, 3.4, etc.

Since it's larger, you won't be spinning it as much, it may run cooler, and your belt will last longer (since the pulley won't be 1" OD).

DIY Supercharging is much easier to do than most believe. On my MR2, I swapped in the JDM 1G-GZE (2.0l I6 Engine)'s SC14 Supercharger unit (1.4l displacement per revolution / same as Domestic SC Previa van units) in place of the stock SC12 unit (1.2l displacement per revolution). I had to make all new mounting brackets, belt tensioner, and I opted to use a Normally Aspirated intake manifold which I believed to have better flow characteristics. I also used a NA Throttle body, which was nearly 1/3" larger ID, and I upgraded all of the Piping from 2" ID to 2.5" ID. Even with the larger piping and better flow, my peak boost went from 12.5 psi to 17 psi. So I gained 36% pressure and 25% volume at the same time. Man what a difference.

And get this, the SC14, 1.4 liter per revolution, is just a hair smaller than the M90 Eaton blower, 1.5 liter per revolution, and yet I was running it on a 1.6 liter engine.

So why then is TRD using the M62, 1.0 liter per revolution, on a 3.4l engine??!?! They are using a SC that is 39% smaller on an engine that is 125% larger than what I did. Yeah, someone really needs to explain to me about that. I wish my 2.7l TRD Supercharger was a M90 with a lower pulley ratio and with the same peak boost. If one argues that it is a smaller unit so it takes less power to spin it, that may be true, but now you have to spin it many times faster in order to achieve the same output. It may have something to do with internal cavitation, but I would rather turn a larger unit at a slower rpm with the same peak boost, if you ask me.

If one is only planning on running 0~4 psi, then its just simple fab work with brackets and piping, and the stock electronics should be sufficient. But if you are looking for a bit more, then you must get involved with tunning, and this is where most people fail to do it right.

Another long debate with no winners. Come on guys we all know EFI beats carb, Turbo beats blower, and Toyota 4X4 rules all! :)

That said, as a diesel mechanic ive become partial to the turbo ;).

well here in backwards world where i live, the carbed truck runs while the EFI one is broken, superchargers are more useful at low RPMs, and i drive a ford while i work on my toyotas :p

If those supercharges are screw compressors, I believe they are.
And if they have the same charastics of industrial refrigeration (ammonia) compressors, then yes they are more efficient at higher RPM's and do could create cavitation at lower RPM.
