Weird noise....4runner ?
« on: Jun 03, 2006, 03:32:50 PM »
About a week ago my 4runner( 1990 4cyl auto) starting making this noise. It sounds like a loud screetching noise and it does it usually when i'm going about 45 or so and at about 1700-2200 rpm. It'll start there and then as long as i keep the gas pedal pushed(even a little) it'll make the noise. I tried taking over drive off and it still does it. I tried taking my foot all the way off the gas and SOMETIMES it will stop when i push it again but not always. I checked all the fluids but the transfer case and they all show full. Has this happend to anyone else? I aprricate the help! thanks

kevin

My first thought would be you recently turned on the A/C since it is getting warmer out and the belt is loose or worn out, or some other belt has become loose or stretched out and needs to be replaced. :dunno:

yah well i know its not a belt, its more a scretching(sp) noise with a little grind to it. it only does it when you accelerate. I doubt it the engine because it had less than 1000 miles on it. i'm thinking transfer case? am i totally wrong?

I would think that too if it came from you, but didn't it just sound brillint when I said it? :haha:

I never heard that out of the auto in my 4runner, what would make you think it's the trans or tcase?

Maybe a bad powersteering pump, or it could be the small pulley has siezed or is bad.

if it only has 1000 miles on it,  then look for loose bellhousing bolts,  and like i already said loose motor mounts

ok well for now its on the lift....just pulled it in there for the night and i'm gonna get the mechanic(dad) to look at it tomrow. i'm sure he can figure it out but i just wanted to see what you guys though. i was thinking it was the tranny because its been shifting hard since we bought it. the kid i bought it from had locked the motor(ran it outta oil) and then the transmission pan had been leaking for who knows how long, same with the transfer case. we rebuilt the engine and  put a gasket on the transmission pan and that leak has been fixed but havent had time to fix the leak on the transfer case. could that be to low? my dad said something about maybe it being the guide on the timing chain. it was just a wild guess b/c he hasent had a chance to test drive it. well sorry this is so long. just trying to figure things out. it seems like its on thing after another breaking on this yota....

hmm, well now you have me thinking the transmission is going out,   if its shifting hard, it probably has a clogged tranny filter  and isnt getting fluid thru the valve body like it should to know how to shift  hard or smooth

when you pulled the pan to replace the gasket was there alot of metal or fiber in the pan??  or did you look

there was MAYBE 2-3 LITTLE pieces stuck to hte magnets but other than that it was fine. its not shifting REALLY hard its just got some age/miles to it. and ofcourse i'd check! why go to all that work and not check something like that...?

I do the "lay under the truck" thing too after a trail run after the truck is washed or the undercarraige sprayed off.  You notice little problems quickly that way, like new leaks, broken bolts, missing bolts, loose stuff, etc.  Does the sound go away at higher rmps/speeds if you keep in it?

i'm pretty sure its my overdrive, i've been keeping the ect button on(i have an auto) so its shifting at higher rpms. when thats on it seems to downshift like it is sopposed to which it wasnt doing be4 once it hit overdrive and i would head up a hill.
