syncros is most likely the problem.  Ive had the same tranny from when my dad originally owned my 81. My reverse always grinds bad, but it still runs prime. I've found if you wait about 1-2 seconds when you put the clutch in to shift it wont grind at all in my situation. Give it a shot.

The grear grind becomes something you learn to control with your trans ( baby or rebuild) some times doubleshifting or even pausing while holding the clutch down between shifts helps\, or know when the gears mesh at what rpm level per gear. On the other hand make sure your oil level is high enough for trans   good luck :blah:

Reverse will grind because there is no syncro. The pilot bearing may also be getting tight causing a drag on the input shaft.

Try putting it in 1st gear before going into reverse. This will stop the trans from spinning before putting it into gear.

On the second gear grinding, the 2nd gear is usually the first to have problems, speed shifting and down shifting causing it to get stretched out.

You could try some thicker oil to see if it will help, but first just try changing the oil if it hasn't been changed in a while.

If the oil won't help you will need new syncros.

Mine does the same thing. (grind between 1st and 2nd)  I just shift slow from 1st into 2nd and I usually don't have any problems.  Rebuilding is your best bet, but if you cant afford it right now then just take your time when shifting between those gears.

nope V6 5spd!

Fluid,  I put fresh synthetic in it about a year ago, maybe it scrubbed all the sludge out of the bearings/syncros, now they are loose? ( not sure of the trucks history for the first 90k of its life)   I'll try the heavier oil first then save my pennies for one of marlins units with a lower gear set!

I have heard that Toyota transmission were designed for GL-4 gear oil and that GL-5 can be too "slick" for the syncros.  Redline MT90 claims to have the right amount of friction for the syncros.

http://www.redlineoil.com/products_gearlubricants.asp?pvID=74&prodID=57&subcatID=18

I have read that using Redline gets rid of the "cold" shift issues in the transmissions as well.  Redline is expensive, so I am considering trying to find a dino GL-4 (not GL-5) in the future and see if it helps my 3-2 downshift and 1-2 upshift.

Hopefully someone else knows more about this?  :dunno:

I swapped the synthetic for some good ole liquid dinasour this weekend.  My grinding has all but disapeared.  Shifting is not as smooth, but hey its a 4x4 right? its not a BMW.  Still saving my  :twocents: for a  :turtle: tranny
