00 Tacoma axel swap
« on: May 14, 2006, 12:14:42 AM »
My friend totaled his Tacoma in a head on collision (sorry no camera for pics) luckily he is OK.
The donor truck was a v6 ext cab and sports the 8” rear with the e locker and stock gears.
My truck is a reg cab with the I4 and has the 8.4 rear with stock gears. I am getting this Axel for free….

1.   If the Axel is in good condition should I swap the trucks Axel out for the 8” with the e-locker or keep the truck's current Axel and put in a ARB?
2.   Is there much difference in strength between the 8” compared to the 8.4”?
3.   If I decide to swap the axles there is a rumor that you can convert the e-locker to a cable activated unit is this true?

I know that the Taco axle is 4" wider than your stock 84.  This is the axle I'm looking for.  It has larger brakes and diffrerent gears are readily available for it.  If you do a search on this forum, you can find how to wire up that e-locker.  It's pretty easy.  I'm not sure about the strength issue.  For my style of driving, I think the e-locker would suit me just fine.
