Factory 4.88 housing and gear question

Hey,
I'd like some clarification on the deal with the factory 4.88 V6 housing and gears, the Pirate FAQ says:

"Note: The above does not apply to the somewhat rare "3rd type" of R&P, the factory 4.88's. These can only be used in the factory 4.88 3rd member housing. This 3rd member housing is different than all the others, and won't accept ANY aftermarket R&P or factory gears of any other ratio. If you have one of these 3rds, it will be that way forever. Please don't sell this 3rd (or god-forbid an empty 3rd member housing) to anyone without fully explaining what they are getting, think of the potential frustration."

What exactly is up? How can one set of R&Ps fit and another won't? What about a Detroit Locker, is there a special one for this 3rd? Are the Bearing sets different than a "normal" V6 3rd?
Thanks,
Mark

theres different offsets in the housing.  which is why  you cant setup any other gearsets in it.

yep, instead of changing the ring gear offset on the carrier(like dana/spicer does) and using a normal V6 case, toyota changed the pinion offset on the 3rd member case, so it calls for a special "thin" ring and pinion.  unfortunately at this time toyota is the only supplier of this gearset so if you are unlucky enough to break one, you get to shell out several hundred dollars for gears.  on the bright side, all reports i've seen say that these are very strong gears from the factory and haven't heard of many breaking.

the carrier is a standard V6 unit, so you can lock it up any way you like.

i think you can however, jsut swap the whole third for a different one, that isnt the factory 4.88 pne and it will be fine and bolt into the axle housing without any issues

correct me if i am wrong, i am not sure on this one

yes, the pattern is the same between all toy 8" 3rds(with the exception of the e-locker).  i replaced the 4.38s in my '79 truck with 2 factory 4.88 3rds.

Well, on a related note...does anyone have a really clear, thorough write up on the installation of new gears? I thought I had one stashed, I may have lost it when my computer crashed.
