Steering box for cross over
« on: May 04, 2006, 07:12:04 AM »
I know this has been covered....I never have any luck with the search engine on this thing.....sorry to go over it again.

Anyway, im gonna do a x-over setup on my 85.  Ive been searching for a steering box.    I notice on a competitors site they recommend a 86-88 box for the 79-85 trucks but say you can use a 89-95 box if you wish.  Whats the difference?  Any reason to use one over the other?
85 4Runner, 4.88s, 33" MTs, ARB, LC(Cam, TB, Injectors, Header), Brake Swap, 89 rear axle, SuperJunk 4" springs for now....

Both boxes are mechanically the same, the benifit of getting one of the 89-95(on the right) boxes, is that the input shaft and casing are longer, so when your axle is pushed forward, you don't have the lengthen your steering shaft. With the 86-88 box you have to cut the steering shaft and weld it back together at a longer length(there are other options, depending on the year of your truck).
Hope this helps

Yes.
It isn't that big of a deal, it's just one more thing to do.
Here are a couple valuable links on how to.
