Head Gasket Diagnosis Time!!! Come one, Come all!

I got my gaskets from ENGNBLDR today...and I finally got the head off the engine.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

Replace it anyway, and scrape all that carbon off the pistons!
Check the head for cracks near the valves.

Is that antifreeze in that piston?

There was a little coolant left in the head and it dropped into the cylinders when I pulled it off.

I personally haven't had much luck with those Rock gaskets... but I've only used them once or twice...

If it was cross-contaminating coolant and oil, carefully check the timing cover for cracks behind the drivers side guide- especially if it was grooved at any time.

If it were my project, I'd get a Toyota Headgasket to put in there.  Also, run a die down ALL the headbolts, and clean all the carbon off of the bolts that came from the exhaust side.  Get a bottoming tap and run it down all the head bolt holes and then blow the holes out with compressed air. 

When re-assembling, coat the head bolts with some moly lube or engine oil, and torque them to 65 ft/lbs (rather than the factory 58 ft/lbs) and it should be good to go.

I just rebuilt an engine and had to replace the head because of Electrolysis. so Check to see if your coolant passages in the head are ok before reassembly.  I also agree with reklund5 on using a toyota head gasket they are only 36 dollars, and are a way better quality

What's the best method of checking coolant passages in the head?  Just clean um and check with a flashlight?

No you will see if the head is bad just by looking at the passages that go from the block to the head.  they should have clean holes that match the holes on the head gasket.  Take a pic of the bottom of the head and I could tell you if it is ok just by the pic. Also check to see if the head is flat.
