Speed sensor
« on: Apr 22, 2006, 11:17:38 AM »
I am doing a swap in my 92 4Runner from a 22RE to a 5.0. I went to the wrecker and found a C4 and a gear driven transfer case out of a 88 4Runner. I figured the speedometer sensors would interchange but by the looks of it there way different size. The one from my 4Runner has was a electronic pick up but the one that came in the new transfer case is a cable driven one. I thought the would just swap nicely but turns out the hole they go into and mounting is way different. I was told that Marlin may have an adapter or something that will work for me that would still let me use the stock speedometer.

As far as I know I don't think marlin has an adapter, just a cable extension for running dual cases.
You may be able to take out the speedo stuff n' crap  :hammerhead: mechanism thingy, from an 88 or prior that is the gear driven type, but you would have to tear into your dash which could be a nightmare.  :dunno:

Anyone else have any ideas. I am hoping there is something out there that will work. If not back to the wrecking yard :(

when i added a crawler to my 93, i used the 93 case as the middle/crawler/whatever it's called and just put an 82 complete case behind it--the vss bolted right in to the 82 case once i unbolted the part the speedo cable screws on to, not sure what would have been different in your 88....

Because your 92 Runner had a G58 5 speed or an auto trans, it had a chain driven t/case that used a magnetic pulse sender that is about the size of a fifty cent coin.
4 cyl gear driven cases use a sender more the size of a quarter.

To make it simple, you need a magitic pulse sender from a 10/91 to 95 gear driven t/case found behind the W56 trans.

Yes, i make a cable adapter to reuse the original chain drive t/case sender, but perfer to do it proper with the 10/91 to 95 factory sender. We have this sender in stock.
The original wiring plug snaps in place and has the same 4 pluses.
