Problems after clutch install
« on: Apr 21, 2006, 07:40:07 AM »
So I just put a new clutch kit in my 1986 pickup, while i was doing it I also swapped the tranny. After getting everything back together, it would not work. you could push the clutch in but you still would grind the gears. If the truck was shut off you could get it in gear. I did replace the release and input shaft bearings whiel doing the clutch. I put a new Slave cylinder in and still nothing. I asked around and I was told I must have put the clutch disk in backwards (i didn't think i did because it was clearly marked "flywheel side") so i tore it apart again and I had not put the clutch in backwards. Infact i couldn't find anything I had done wrong. After this I replaced the clutch master cylinder too, but still nothing. hopefully someone can help me because this is getting annoying haha.

Sounds like the clutch is not engaging properly, or fully. Did you bleed the hydrolic lines when you switched the Slave & Master cylinder? :slap:

you say you swapped the tranny, but didn't say why or what trans you used--any chance what ever you are using for a pilot bearing could be a little too tight on the trans input shaft now (ie, making the input shaft spin even if the clutch is disengaged), or the shaft was burred a little and is stuck to the pilot brg now that has been pulled in by the bolts?
just another thought if the hydraulics aren't an issue and clutch is found to be installed correctly

yea, i did bleed the clutch system after installing it, but unfortunatly still nothing. I had swapped the tranny because it was making noise in gears 1, 2, 3, and 5. I think the bearing might have been going but i don't know aton about trannys so i might be wrong there,  The tranny I took out was a W56 and I put a W56 back in it. The shaft looked fine but i didn't go over it with a fine tooth comb. Unfortunitly I might be taking it to one of my Dad's friends to have him do it, I gotta keep up with school work!

sounds like the clutch fork pivot  is wrong,   check your old tranny  and the new tranny and see if there is a difference in the length of the  pivot ball stud thing

if its not  right the clutch wont work

i changed to a L50 from a L43  and had to adapt a pivot ball to work

maybe thats what it is, i did use the clutch fork from the old tranny. but the pivot ball is the same length. I even tried putting a couple washers behind it the give it a bit more throw.

maybe it needs less throw,  put the fork in and work it with your hand,  see if it works without touching anything

maybe you need to shorten the slave-to-fork rod

I think its still either the clutch slave not bled all the way or a failed clutch master not building pressure when the pedal is depressed. Does the clutch slave move when the clutch pedal is pressed? I dont think the fork is the problem simply cause it woulda been pretty obvious when it was part. I dont think the clutch friction can even fit the other way around on a toyota so you can check that off the list. Do you even get a pedal when the clutch is pressed and it wont go in gear?   Mike :turtle:

You may want to change the master also if you didnt already. What happens is a new clutch puts extra strain on the old one causing the seal to rupture when used with a new stiff pressure plate. If your having trouble bleeding it you may want to try the new master. They had a high failure rate anyway even with a stock clutch.  Mike

Yeah, how are you bleeding the clutch...go buy one of those cheap pump bleeders...the clutch usually take a bit more work than brakes...

have you adjusted the clutch linkage from under the dash? Mine did the same thing after i swapped, until I screwed the MC linkage all the way out ran it, then put it where it needs to be. It took a bunch of fiddling but it works. You might have an air pocket in the line b/t the masterC and some part of the line. Thats what happened on mine.

Sorry for the long LONG delay in posting this but i have been super busy with school. The problem was the clutch freeplay being out of adjustment. does anyone know what could have caused this??
