A tacoma rear is probably wider, but i'd beef it up before you do what your avatar is showing. Otherwise i'd go with a full floater kit with disc brakes and ifs hubs. That would/should give you another 3". (on a 4X rear end, not sure if you can use the same full floater on a 2wd)

You could also look for a Ford 9" out of an early bronco, you would have endless possibilities with a 9".

Just for your comfort, there is a guy up here in WA who runs around in the sand dunes, he has a 2wd Yota, 3rd gen, 350 SBC, Auto Trans, and a total chaos kit, using the stock rear axle, that is welded, he has not had a problem yet and he smashes on that thing.

I have several friends that have those "Shoe box Bronco's" and from what they tell me 98% of them with the 9 inch rear ends only have 28 spline axles so they are obviously the weak link.  You could up grade to the 31 spline but it will take some $$$ to do.  It does not suprise me that the Toy rear has held up.  I am a firm believer that those axles "will" take a tremendous amount of abuse!
It's built Chevy tough with Toyota stuff!

do ya'll think there would be less stress on the bearings with wider rear wheels? or should i just stick with the spacers?

There would definitely be less stress on the bearings if you swap over to a full floater.

Glen, did you just skip the top and read the last post? haha

This is for a pre runner, you know... for running in the dunes and desert, he's got IFS in the front (prolly long arm) of his two wheel drive Toyota. ::)

Hmmm I want to get a full floater but cant find em. ALso would switching from 15x7's to 15x8-10s lighten the stress on the bearings if I ditch the spacers?

Maybe a little because the weight of the truck is now spread across a larger tire surface area, tires DO take some shock out of an impact/landing. Nevermind the fact that it would be safer, as in no chance of spacers loosening overtime.

But I seriously think you'd be better off with either converting your axle to a full floater, or swapping in a heavier duty axle that is already set up as a full floater.

FROR's conversion kit.
